Ryman Premier League Headlines

McCan Expects Better Hendon Season - Gary McCann, manager of Ryman League Premier Division club Hendon, is predicting a better season for the Greens.

A poor start last time left Hendon playing catch up and they spent most of the campaign fighting relegation.

However, a strong finish, in which they hauled themselves well clear of the drop zone, coupled with a more settled summer to date, has given McCann much cause for optimism.

He said: "I am very confident that we are going to make a better start this season than we did in 2008. The off-field issues last summer and autumn (the club had to leave their Claremont Road home for 82 years in September) were a real distraction and I want everything to be positive in 2009."

McCann (pictured) added: "We have a very settled squad, and I am hoping that there will be no more than a couple of additions and departures from the squad which finished last season so well.?

The Greens, who played most of their home games at Wembley FC last season, are again up against clubs with much bigger budgets, but they continue to defy the odds.

McCann is hoping a good start, something they had in 2007, will help them stay clear of danger, and even push on towards a play-off place, something they almost gained just over a year ago, much to everyone's surprise.

McCann has announced a busy pre-season schedule. Hendon have ten matches, plus a four-team tournament on the slate.

McCann said: "We have a lot more games this pre-season than I have arranged previously. What I want to do is to ensure that all of the squad gets more playing time. I want what I hope to be the first-team squad to get at least three or four full 90 minutes and everyone, including triallists, to have at least two full games."

Hendon will have former favourite Wayne O'Sullivan back in a green shirt this season, the player having re-signed a couple of weeks ago.

O'Sullivan left the Greens to play for Blue Square Premier outfit Stevenage Borough.

Waltham Abbey Re-shuffle Staff - Waltham Abbey have begun gearing up for their first season in the Ryman League Premier Division with a continental-style reshuffle at the top.

The club?s players returned to training last week for the first time after their summer break with their thoughts already turned to the coming campaign in the top flight. They also discovered that the management team has been freshened up.

Former club manager Bobby Ballard has moved up into a director of football position at the Abbotts, while Tony Tillbrook has stepped up from assistant-manager to a head coach role ? similar to the structure at many clubs across Europe. Lee Johnson has also joined the team as a technical manager, overseeing the administration side of affairs, while Tillbrook concentrates on on-pitch matters.

Tillbrook said that the changes had been mooted for a while and that he was looking to make further additions to the backroom staff.

"To be honest, I was in charge of the first-team for most of last season, so it seemed best to sort things out for the Ryman Premier," he said. "Bobby has become a director of football and Lee is taking care of matters off the pitch.

"I?m hoping to bring in Andy Purcell, who has played for Abbey in the past, as a player-coach. He coaches with me at the Tottenham Hotspur Academy, he?s got his UEFA `B` licence and I think he can bring a lot to the club."

There has also been movement on the player front. Keeper Richard Hayward, whose penalty saves in the play-off final shoot-out helped Abbey win promotion, has decided to end his time at Abbey due to work commitments, as has the versatile Michael Sharman.

While star striker Harry Elmes has re-signed for another season, the club also announced that Jordan Bostock had been released by mutual consent, but Tillbrook believed that the defender may have had a change of heart.

"Richard is calling it a day. We?re going to miss him. He was key to us gaining promotion," said Tillbrook. "Michael has moved on due to work commitments. Jordan was having similar problems, but he turned up for training, so we?re going to see how that develops. Things in football change quickly.

"Harry has signed up again, which is great because he?s had experience of this level of football with AFC Hornchurch. We?re looking to see over the next couple of weeks who joins him, but it?s too early to work out the size and balance of the squad and who we need to bring in."

Hastings Chase Brighton Youngster - Ryman League Premier Division club Hastings United are hoping to secure the services of teenage striker Liam Upton when they resume training.

The former Brighton youngster is due to attend the first pre-season session on Thursday.

"He's coming down and hopefully he is going to sign," said Hastings manager Tony Dolby.

"He's got the background in professional training and he's been schooled the right way," he went on. "He's a local lad and wants to play for his local side, and put himself in the shop window.

"I've met him and he seems like an up for it sort of lad. He can play upfront or left and right which is important."

Upton starred for William Parker Sports College when they were crowned Coca-Cola English Schools Football Association Under-13 National champions in 2004, scoring in every game of the thirteen-match run including a stunning free kick in the final at Stamford Bridge.

His dreams of progressing with Brighton were dashed earlier this summer when he was told he would not be graduating into the first-team and was released by the Coca-Cola League One outfit.

Upton's arrival would negate the loss of last season's leading scorer Frankie Sawyer, who has joined Ryman Premier rivals Carshalton Athletic.

Gray Jumps At Carshalton Chance - New signing Matt Gray insists he did not have to think twice about joining Carshalton Athletic, despite his close ties to fierce Ryman League Premier Division rivals Sutton United.

Gray was unveiled as one of the Robins? six summer recruits at a club launch night on Tuesday evening at Colston Avenue, as preparations get underway for another assault on the Ryman Premier.

And the combative midfielder, who spent a lengthy spell at Gander Green Lane before departing in May 2007, is relishing the challenge.

Gray said: ?It was a very easy decision for me to make to be honest.

?I have been speaking to Hayden Bird about coming here for quite some time and I am really looking forward to it.

?I have a lot of friends that play here and I noticed how well they did last year.

?I had offers from clubs at Conference level, but I did not think I would benefit from a move like that.

?It will be strange when we go to play at Sutton - well, strange to sit in the away dressing room anyway.

?I would like to think that I would get a good reception there as I have never bad-mouthed the club or the fans, but it is not as though I have joined any old team so I?m not sure I will.?

After departing Sutton Gray appeared for both Woking and Havant & Waterlooville in the Conference, which included lining up against Brentford in last season?s FA Cup.

And the 25-year-old admits he will be looking to pass that know-how on to his new team-mates.

He added: ?I had five or six meetings with Hayden and that came up each time.

?He wants me to be the spirit of the team.

?I need to lead by example and get as much of that experience across to the other players and I am more than happy to do that.?

Canvey Island Reveal Charity Partnership - Canvey Island have announced that St Lukes Hospice will be the Ryman League Premier Division club`s exclusive charity.

The two-year partnership with the charity will kick-off from the start of the (2009/10 season) and hopes to raise funds by engaging players, supporters and the community, as well as helping raise awareness for the charity.

As part of the partnership, St Lukes will be promoted on Canvey Island`s official home and away shirts as well as branding at the club`s stadium and on the official website www.canveyislandfc.com

St Luke?s Hospice, based in Basildon, cares for thousands of people each year through a diverse range of services. They provide specialist care for patients who have an advanced disease, as well as those who love and care for them. The Hospice also runs a community children?s Specialist Bereavement Service and Information Resource Centre in Corringham.

Marilyn DeBattista, Head of Revenue Services, said: ?It is an honour for St Luke?s to be chosen as Canvey Island FC?s official charity. We are delighted to have been chosen as a cause close to the hearts of players and club members - their support is invaluable to us.

?St Luke?s is committed to providing care of the highest quality, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Having the value of our work recognised and supported by Canvey Island FC will enable us to have confidence in being able to sustain this commitment. We were very excited to hear their plans in support of our fundraising and look forward to working with them over the next two years.?

Canvey Island`s commercial manager Chris Sutton added: ?We are delighted that St Luke`s Hospice have agreed to become the club`s exclusive charity. The partnership not only reflects Canvey Island FC?s commitment to our local area, but also in supporting what the club feels is an excellent charity that provides first class care and support to its patients and families.?

K's Winger Set For Grays Trial - Kingstonian winger Dean Lodge will start the pre-season campaign on a two-week trial at Blue Square Premier side Grays Athletic, according to the Ryman League Premier Division club`s boss Alan Dowson.

The 23-year-old played a significant role in K`s Ryman Division One South title-winning season, helping them to the flying start that ultimatly carried them to the crown.

Dowson's men will start pre-season training on Monday without the influential wide man, who endured a doomed spell with Northwich Victoria last season before returning to Kingsmeadow to help claim a league winners` medal.

Dowson insists life goes on although the former QPR trainee will be more than welcome to rejoin his squad should he fail to land another potential dream move.

"I've always said he would be better staying with us, but there is not a lot we can do to stop him going on trial elsewhere," he said.

"We just have to crack on with things and get someone else in if he is not going to be around.

"I'm already looking at four or five players in pre-season and that is the maximum we'll be looking at.

"He'll not play for anyone else unless they are at a higher level and if he becomes available again we'll play find a way of fitting him in.

"He is the sort of player you put in the team because he can get you something out of nothing."

Carshalton Sign Cousins From St. Albans - Ryman League Premier Division club Carshalton Athletic have signed defender Scott Cousins from Blue Square South side St Albans City.

Cousins played 151 times for the Saints, scoring four goals.

An exceptional left-back who regained his place in the Saints` side at the start of September following a prolonged lay off after suffering a broken leg at Tamworth in January 2006, Cousins began his career with Queens Park Rangers before spending five years with Chelsea.

He joined the Saints in the summer of 2004 after a season with Hendon and had spells with Harrow Borough and Wealdstone during his rehabilitation in 2006/07.

After a couple of years coaching at the David Beckham Academy in Greenwich the summer of 2007 saw him join the coaching staff at the St Albans-based Oaklands College, which partakes in the PASE scheme.

Kingstonian Go Antipodean - A friendly match with a twist has been arranged against 'The Anzacs' (Pulse Premier Soccer) on Monday 13th July, kick off 7.45pm at Grand Drive (Raynes Park Vale).

The opponents are a team of Australians and New Zealanders who all have international experience of some sort, ie: youth, U21's, U23's, B-internationals.

The night will be themed so dress for the antipodean occasion! A barbie will be flaming through the evening and there will be a free tinnie for each adult spectator. Bonza! Admission is just £6, and there will be a complimentary bus service running between Raynes Park train station and the Grand Drive ground.

Manager Alan Dowson comments, "This one's a bit different but we'll face a tough test as it's against a talented group of players who are coming over to make an impression to join English clubs. They're very keen to play against us and we're making an effort to make it a good night for everyone."

Locke Rewarded With Stones Contract - Wealdstone FC defender Darren Locke, 23, one of last seasons most improved players has been rewarded with a contract.

The tall centre half joined the Stones in July 2008, and, after a series of impressive performances with the reserve team made his first team debut in the eventful 4-3 win at The Vale against now promoted Staines Town in October 2008.

The commanding Locke went on to make a total of 17 appearances in all competitions for the Stones last season, 4 as substitute. He scored one goal, in the Ryman League Premier League in the 2-3 defeat at Sutton United.

Meanwhile Gordon Bartlett's squad report for pre season training on Tuesday 30th June in preparation for their first friendly match of the new campaign at The Vale against Watford FC on Saturday 18th July. This match is rapidly followed by the encounter with Leeds United on Tuesday 21st July again at The Vale.

Carshalton Set To Sign Sawyer - Carshalton Athletic are set to sign former Hastings United and highly rated youngster Frankie Sawyer.

Sawyer, 20, shot to fame last season after scoring 5 goals against Billiericay and one of the quickest hat-tricks in Ryman League history.

The lethal striker will partner Richard Jolly in what looks to be a mouthwatering front-line.
