St Georges Day !

Recommended Posts

well...you did find the pre-written 'rant' after all then....

firstly I do not seek to abuse or ridicule you and if that is the way that my posts come across to you then I apologise...you make humerous and intelligent posts on here even if they do appear to be somewhat 'guardianista orientated' in their composition...

however....I have my views and I have expressed them....I do not seek to enforce them upon others mind you and hopefully have reached a stage in my life where tolerance and moderation is practised in all things (although I found a very good chablis in a Chinese...sorry international... restaurant last night and there wasn't much moderation there I'm afraid)

it wouldn't do my friend if we agreed on all things and if we did I suspect that these debates would become somewhat boring and peter out......

I'm still gonna keep my flag up anyway.....hope you all win tommorrow.....

No need to apologise you old rascal, all taken and meant in a "pub debate" manner! Of course when only the printed word is available, the intonation, tongue in the cheek and twinkle in the eye cannot be detected and perhaps some of us can sound a bit more pompous than we mean.

Although I do think that moderation is often overdone...

Fantastic post Invisable Man !

As you say Official We all have our own views on some issues and i am sure on other issues just maybe we would all agree! This is life "casa rah sa rah, whatever will be will be"

Life would be boring if we did all agree, thats why i read other news papers because i like to hear and disagree with other peoples view! ( it is at the precise moment quite boring switching between Rupert and Countdown probally shouldnt have said that lol!)

As Official says best of luck to all your teams except if you support Berkhampstead because i really wanna go up tommorow lol

Very good I-Man but cobblers in one respect

You and your friends who Ill gamble use the "little islanders" expression over look one issue in how the rest of us look at Europe

I love visiting Europe and have many long term European friends and for me thats how it should remain

Britain cannot afford to treat its sick, educate its youth or allow its senior members to hold a pension that at least measures up to the minimum wage and its transport systems are in tatters

However we are very good at foreign policy and our armed forces are the very best

We have had hidden from us the true cost of this power drive to a "federal states of Europe" The real problem is that the common man in Britain (and Germany)is paying in cash for a political dream which was never a sensible business target

We were assured by our govermment the F.S.E would never be a proposition, they lied

They assured us that we would have a referendum as to whether or not we would join the common currency, Now they drive down the pound at every opportunity to ensure that we consider the option viable

From day one the British public has been and is being conned

Get our third rate MPs back of their junkets and get Britain working before the grand scheme for Federal Europe is ever mentioned again

a peoples celebration of their patron saints day , or any other national day is in direct reverse proportion to how comfortable they are with their nationality...

you can see from this theory that the irish scotish and americans and french are neurotic little nationalists, whereas the the super cool english dont care what other people think..we know we are the best...

the germans also dont do national days in a big way but not because they are cool , but because they cant stop themselves from invading poland...

I'm in all sorts of trouble now, I may have to go for a beer later to try and calm down.

pabird, I think you've just lost your gamble, although I don't know which of my friends you mean. As we were discussing England, the term "islanders" is not applicable. Further, I believe the common expression is "little Englanders" rather than "islanders". But I quibble. I do not claim to have never used the term in my life, but not habitually and not on this forum. I have applied it to a lady who regularly contributes to the letters page of our local rag and who makes you guys look like Che!

The matters that you speak of are in practise merely administrative affairs. How and by whom the drains are repaired is somethng of an irrelevance as long as someone does it.

But if Britain's services, shall we call them that, are so poor (in relation to what? Asia? Africa? Eastern Europe?) why are you so intent on keeping the adminstation that has failed us so badly?

Frankly, I totally agree that the actual mechanism of Europe is a bureacratic and undemocratic nightmare, and I suspect that alone has turned many people against the notion of Europe. It's the [color:"red"] principle [/color] that I support. A united (in whatever sense you fancy) Europe can compete with the US and the Far East, but parochial bickering among ourselves will slide us into the economic non-league.

And of course it will save changing money up when we nip over to Calais for the Christmas booze run.

I think the St. patricks day thing is because Guinness see it as a big marketing occasion - almost every pub in the area had special drink's promotions - I ended up with a couple of hats and a bodhran! The pubs wouldn't have pushed the boat out if Guinness hadn't sent them free flags t-shirts etc! There isn't a decent English beer to push St George's day in this way. John Spits (the nearest I could think of) is, frankly, pish so the nearest I found was some bottles of (very nice) Young's St Georges Ale in my local Sainsbury's which meant that his day was very much enjoyed in this corner of Essex!

OK OK Lass ! So I started it, and have spent many pleasant minutes reading through the replys.

Sorry Invisible, but I've got to take you to task on one point............

You said, "Frankly, I totally agree that the actual mechanism of Europe is a bureacratic and undemocratic nightmare, and I suspect that alone has turned many people against the notion of Europe. It's the principle that I support. A united (in whatever sense you fancy) Europe can compete with the US and the Far East, but parochial bickering among ourselves will slide us into the economic non-league."

After the Frogs and Gerries showed their true colours and opted not to get involved in the removal of one of the most evil dictators this world has ever seen, do you honestly believe the Yankee Bush Man will really want o deal with Europe, let alone trust any of 'em ???

I happen to like Bush's style, even if it is a bit right wing and extreme. (He has signed plenty of Death Warrants in the past.)

I do some free-lance writing for some specialist magazines, (animal rights etc), and got into a lot of trouble with one sentence when discussing the stupidity of Britain relaxing our Rabies regulations.

I said " I am English First, British Second, and European NEVER."

So now you know. Incidently, I love European. Lived in the South of FRance for a year. The only pproblem with Europe is the people who live there !

Start the Car........................... !!

Bush: my point exactly. Bush has no interest in Europe (or anywhere else) other than self-interest, therefore Europe should stand on its own two feet (or 600mm if you prefer).

Frogs and Gerries? I recall that pretty much everyone but Blair was against the war.

Never European? As I said above, you are old son, like it or not.

I would opine that it is not race, religion or nationality that define one, these being human constructs, but culture. Cultures are more subtle and less different than one might imagine.

Except gooners of course.

Right, you're home now. It's Friday evening so don't opine. Get yourself a nice beer, Black Sheep, Speckled Hen, Spitfire - something of that ilk and chill out!!

Mixed up are we

Merely admin? Then tell me how many of the Euro 25 members club are positive contributors, I do mean cash, You know real money

Why so disparaging reference Africa Asia and the eastern block

People in desperate need of surgery in Britain are travelling to South Africa to save their lives

The Eastern block was a conglomerate of European countries put together to function as a cooperative, They know no other way to survive than to have others make their decisions for them, Not so Great Britain (Ill bet that "Great" opened a few sores)

We have been making our own decisions throughout history but now need idiot Europeans to tell us what shape bananas, sausages and tomatoes we can eat and in what currency we can request payment

It has now been revealed that if we are stupid enough to join the common currency we can only attend 4 out of 5 of the meetings that will make decisions reference interest rates? Please the jokes are coming too fast to be absorbed
