Use of information from NLOTN

On an earlier thread I mentioned about stuff being copied and pasted directly from NLOTN.
I have no problem with this as long as an active link is put in the posting.
Rivals.net are pretty stringent on their copyright rules - particularly when it comes to copying and pasting directly from the network. At least one Ryman League club has fallen foul of printing our stuff word for word without acknowledgement - and that was a club who ought to know better.
As far as I am concerned, anything can be used - as long as acknowledgement, and an active link are included.

I think the title of this thread is wrong. Of course it is a breach of copyright to copy and paste information from the NLOTN (or any other) website without the permission of the copyright owner. However, as far as I am awawre, it is not a breach of copyright to use information from NLOTN (or any other source), provided it is expressed differently. It is the expression which is copyrighted.
Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Of course you're right, Colin.
Can you imagine the shambles...
Canvey Island FC (the name is copyright of the club) are playing Wigan Athletic FC (the name is copyright of the club) on Saturday 17th November, 2001 (the date is copyright of Letts Diarys) at the JJB Stadium (the name is copyright of JJB plc) in the Axa FA Cup (copyright of Axa/Football Association).
What a load of rubbish. The information is available everywhere, including NLOTN and there is no need to give any acknowledgement because it is information in the public domain. To sell that information or to use it as promotional information, i.e. on a pools coupon, now that's different.
I think someone is empire building here.
Merv

Actually, I got that information off the Canvey Island FC © website (copyright of First Hosting).

Fair comment lads.
When you put it like that, it seems reasonable to me to put a link to another site when info has come from there. Actually, links to other sites are always useful anyway.
Seems this copyright business is a bit of a mine field - don't think I stray there any more.
Merv

Of course copying and pasting without permission is breach of copyright.
Actually, we all want NLOTN to keep up their good work. So it is in everybody's interests to put up a link pointing out that there is lots of useful and interesting information there.

Thank you Simon.
I have no problem with the stuff being used, or information being taken, that's partly what its there for.
What I have a problem with is people not giving us the acknowledgement, when it is blatently obvious it has been cut and pasted from NLOTN.
Fortunately 99% of Ryman webmasters and I have a mutual agreement to use each others stuff - all I am asking for is an acknowledgement that the information has been taken from NLOTN.
Feel free to cut and paste what you want - just give us an acknowledgement, with an active link. I don't think I'm asking too much.
