new and stars

The last couple of seasons have seen many new stars that (it was thought) would greatly contribute to CIFC gaining Conference

Ryman premier is not the game ex-full time pro!s believe it to be and even those who eventually make it work need time to settle in

Lets give the new boys time to settle

Conference was actually missed by a wide margin last season and we do need an early start, no silly dropped points

Personally, I think the “stars” that play for us either settle in straight away, or just aren’t up to it, Dicks and Minton for two did/have done well.

When a player arrives at this club then the slate should be wiped clean as to what they have achieved before.

We have the skill but need pace in the side this year, especially at the back. Will Wardy be available at the beginning of the season? Believe he mentioned a short while ago that he hasn’t recovered from last season’s injury.

We need a back up player for him when he’s not available. May not be an ideal solution for a few but Peter Smith would be a good re-signing.

Buzz, (unfortunately) lost it all at Grays along with every ex-Canvey player that left us.

Our back line is aging, Wardy will be 30 soon, Benno is well past 30, Ross Johnson is 30, Crow is 29, Chenners, (I think) is around 27. Gavin Cowan is our youngest, (and most promising) Defender.

Not to mention if we sign Damon Searle he's 30 too.

Now I'm not saying that 30 is bad for a player, I'm just noting that this settled team over the next couple of seasons is more and more likely to crack due to increasing injuries, retirement etc.

We have Lewis Lilley coming through the ranks on the left, and he's 18 so he will be an exciting one to look out for in the future. What we need is someone a bit older than him who hasn't quite made it at Ipswich for example and who can play on the right-side of defence covering for Wardy.

In 5 years a backline of Lilley, Cowan, Chenery and ***insert young Right-Back here*** could be pushing us up through the Conference.

It’s good to have a balance of young and old, well elder! The Stimmo/Tilson with the other younger players in the team at the time was a good balance. The experience, enthusiasm and pace blended very well.

Interesting to note there Matt on the ages of some players. Believe Age Concern have been taking an interest in the club!

Most of those you have mentioned are still up to the task but it does need some younger, pacier, hungrier types to come in now.

Aldershot were all pace and passion. It seems that we need that mixture again of “old and new”, pace and skill to go that one higher position in the league.

It's often said in football that if a player is good enough he is old enough. Surely this also works in the reverse - if a player can still fight it out with the rest of them they are still 'young' enough to play. Just look at Stuart Pearce, Sherringham, Winterburn, Adams etc. Even though very few players continue to don their boots in their mid-late 30's this certainly doesn't mean your players won't.

I thought Arsenal would have needed to replace their back four around 3/4 years before they actually did! Even then the replavements didn't find it easy keeping their place.

Commitment is the key - always has been, always will be.

I know someone from university who was studying Philosophy. They told me how they got stoned, wrote an essay and got a damned 1st for it!!!

But re my last post, the only reason I wrote something was because I accidentally clicked the 'continue' button on quick reply. Had trouble thinking of something to quickly put in there, but being a woman I was able to warble on for an eternity!

Kinda like now, really. All things considered, this is not really the quick reply I was planning. Hmmm....

But your response to the age question was spot on

The only issue is coaching and management staff with young and older players should be alert to wear and tear signs

In judgement of performance there is no tick box for age IE Age is no part of performance
