Canvey Island 0 - 3 Dag & Red

A flattering score-line for the Daggers as once again Canvey managed to put together some great football at times.

Danny Shipp put Dagenham 1-up from the penalty spot just before half-time after Ashley Harrison brought down Leon Braithwaite in the penalty area.

Mark Janney then fired low and hard past Danny Potter in the closing minutes of the game to make it two. Followed by a 3rd right on full-time by Meechan.

Canvey deserved at least two goals with Ollie Berquez and on numerous occasions Ty Gooden having Canvey's best chances.

3-0 makes it look like a stuffing, but even the Daggers fans would have to agree we played some amazing football. Gooden and Midgley were superb, a class above the opposition. Thurgood has really impressed me, and everything bad about him I have heard seems completely unfounded, I would sign him straight away. The defence didn't get back effectively enough, hence the scoreline. Apparently a certain centre back has re-signed for the Gulls or is about too, and I'm disgusted!

Anyway, great entertainment tonight and the season looks extremely promising!!!

I could understand buzz wanting to come back - he can't go full time at Grays.

He is a very good , strong defender and I for one was very surprised to see him go and would welcome him back - we need to strenthen our defence.

Least it ain't stimmo coming back now that would be wrong!

Buzz wouldn't get into the CIFC First XI simple as that!

Although he has played a friendly for us, (which one? I hear you ask)

Our defence of Chenery, Ward, Theobald, Cowan, Crow & Duffy who seems to be playing left-back now looks strong, especially now we're playing 4 at the back.

I think where our defence let us down in the 2nd half last night was the lack of width when defending. When attacking we were great. Crow was un-marked and in acres of space on the left, the same with Chenery on the right. However when defending, both seemed to be drawn into the centre leaving a man out wide on each flank. Now only sometimes the Daggers attackers managed to put this into good effect. But it is something we could be caught on again. I still think our defenders are letting the attackers run too far into the penalty area and backing away, rather than risking a challenge outside the box. Gavin Cowan was guilty of this last night.

If our backline kept it's width and wasn't frightened to put in a few rough tackles outside the penalty area. The most they would give away would be a free-kick. Then I think we would let in a lot less than last season. Dagenham didn't deserve to win by 3 goals no way!!

I was pleased with Thurgood last night also. I can see why Southend would want to keep him. Even if he did do a typical 'Southend pass' on one occasion. The height of Cowan & Theobald as two Centre-Halves is mouth watering. Just like having Steve Porter back!!

In fact I think our defence was good enough last night, that even Wardy would struggle to keep down a regular place!

Have we signed Theobald yet? Thought he was excellent again last night, with him, Wardy, chenners and cowan surely we would have the best back four in the league.

Dont want to see Peter Smith back after he done the dirty on us,some people have very short memories, serves him right for believing Stimmos bulls**t.

Gravesend away sticks out in my mind too. But he's two years older now and he wouldn't be worth signing back again. Unless he can find his past form, then I don't think he'd be worthwhile and the complete opposite of what our defence needs.

BTW - Where is Micky Bennett? Is he on holiday or something?

I saw him on Friday night but not last night.

I like the look of Theobald. He's a big lad who reads the game well.

Certainly Midgley has been impressive. He holds the ball up well and is a real scrapper. I'd like to see him up front alongside Boylan rather than playing just behind him.

Thurgood certainly doesn't deserve the criticism he has got from some people. He may not be third division class but he'll do well in the Ryman.

Duffy's crossing was appalling last night. There was one moment when he got into a good position on the left in the second half. I yelled at him not to shoot but what did he do? You've guessed it, belted it over the bar!

Gooden and Minton looked absolute class. Gooden could have had a hattrick last night.

We were unlucky to lose 3-0 but Daggers were more ruthless in front of goal and took their chances well. We've played two sides who'll probably win their respective divisions and acquitted ourselves very well.

Roll on Southend on Saturday!!

Cause Dag & Red didn't deserve to win by 3 goals, not at any point of the game did they look like they had total control of the game and were running us ragged. We gave them as good as they gave us. The difference was the finishing. In fact I'd go as far as to say that we had more shots at goal than them!

They thought they outclassed us last night, they're flattering themselves.

Dagenham certainly didn't outclass us. It was a good professional away performance where they soaked up the pressure and were devestating on the counter attack and but for some bad finishing and some excellent keeping it would have been a lot closer. Certainly on another day the result would have been a lot different.

It's not hard to see why Dagenham have done so well. They're a solid unit that gets results even when they are not firing on all cylinders something that Canvey really need to do.
