Southend Utd -Vs- Canvey Island FC

Hey WS,

Thought I'd just let you know that Mick Mean It Magnusson isn't a Canvey fan! and I cannot believe you're referring to us as Pikies! Ok I know Westcliff isn't Southend but come on, I'd rather live here than in Southend!

I've got friends that live in Benfleet, Leigh, Westcliff & Southend and all I hear them moaning about is the immigrants and the real pikies. No wonder they're all moving on the island from there. The one place they will not find an immigrant or pikey living is Canvey Island, maybe come for a day-trip from East London or something but they soon bugger off to their Southend slums.

Uncle Urchin was right, Southend is a place all on it's own. They should invent their own immigration laws and send a nice ferry down the estuary full of 'em into the North Sea loaded with C4 explosives or something. One push of a button, problem solved.

Canvey is a nicer place to live than Southend believe me. Ok there may not be as much to do on Canvey as there is in Southend. But we have a quality football team and everyone's basic needs are here. Shops, Pubs, Take Aways etc. Anyone needs anything I hardly see them going to Southend to get it! More like Basildon & Pitsea...

Ha! Southend compared to Basildon, wouldn't want to live anywhere near either of them!!

Sorry to rant on but the one thing in this place that really gets on my nerves is people claiming that we're pikies and Southend is as clean and immigrant free as a whistle. I know where I'd rather live and Southend it ain't!

Nothing special?! Ha!! Speak for yourself!!!

Crap game? Don't think so if we can beat Div 3. oppostion in a friendly, ("only a friendly?" "Players not performing 100%" "We'll only treat this as a friendly" MY [****!!****]!!!!) Then things are looking pretty good for our season. If you're better in the League that you were today, then you might actually make mid-table. If today you put everything into it...handbags as well. Then you'll probably find yourselves in a relegation dogfight.

Were we really the under-dogs today? Hmm difficult to tell. Wignall's comments were pretty fair I reckon, get it right for the Colchester game for your sake!!!!

Oh dear, oh dear, it has all kicked off. Well as an independent observer, can I just welcome the Southend supporters to this Non League forum (nice to see that you recognise the fact that "we" - the collective "we" that is - exist outside the peramiters of League Division Football) and fill them in on a couple of things.

1. Canvey Island supporters take their football seriously. Even friendlies. To back this fact up, please see the previous message links re. their other friendlies. This cannot be understated!!! These people are serious Non League footie fanatics.

2. You are right. It is a friendly and therefore nothing as regards the future of Southend United can be based on the 1 nil defeat that Canvey handed out to you. Likewise for Canvey Island. These games are for getting players match fit for the coming season as well to re build or try out new players. Again, our Canvey supporters seem not to see this, as every game is a competitive battle to be won. If not won, then the other team woz lucky. Again, I am not here to judge their standing on this. Their attitude and loyalty towards their team is an example to us all.

3. Friendlies are also an opportunity for the local supporter to see either their favorite professional team pit their skill against their fav local team whilst generating some much needed cash for the local side. I'll leave this argument alone but won't as I can't see Canvey playing at Roots Hall a major money spinner for Southend United. Whilst a league team playing at Canvey's game would've been good PR for the League team and would've generated much needed cash (?) for the Non League team.

4. Freindlies of this nature are of a "show boating" style. Football skills for both teams are to the fore as the League team don't want to see their first team players injured and neither does the Non League team but the Non League team WILL want to put in a good show and a victory for the lower league team is always a point to boast about, given the standing of the professional team. The local rivalry makes this even more so.

Billericay are playing Lyton Orient, Gillingham and a Spurs XI (a little plug here). I do not exepct any more or any less from those games for my part (before anyone from Canvey wishes to "take the piss").

Pre season friendlies are an important part of a season programme and long may they continue but, lads, lets get some pesective here and enjoy them for what they are.

With tounge firmly in cheek, I bid you all a successful season (both teams).

And I still haven't had my tea or coffee and read the report in the papers...

Are, but THIS WAS NO FRIENDLY!!! Southend gave 110% as did we, which is why a player from each team was asked to leave the pitch or be sent off. I thought we played some great football at times, and defended really well when necessary. Gavin Cowan played well, he is really looking ready for the new season, someone we missed so much last year.

Drewe Broughton missed two sitters, where as Lee Boylan tested Emberson (who did better than I expected)on at least three occasions. Duffy played well, and Benno did well for his first game back. And as for Gooden and Midgley, they were superb!

In reaction to GazzaBTFC's previous comment, your team were lucky ASHRIMPER - to only lose 1-0! I was sick and tired with Southend fans saying "it's only a friendly", as why were they getting so worked up about losing if this is how they felt. I was loving it winding them up on the way out - they were GUTTED!!!

1-0 TO THE SUPER GULLS!!!
