Southend Utd 0 - 1 Canvey Island

A SUPERB performance by the Gulls this afternoon!!

Ty Gooden scored the only goal of the game on 40 minutes heading home a great cross from Neil Midgley...I think!

Carl Emberson was on form to deny Lee Boylan & Jeff Minton prior to the goal who could've easily trebled the scoreline.

Southend I feel could've had a penalty shout in the first half for shirt pulling.

Good to see Micky 'Big Dave' Bennett back in Midfield, playing quite well for only his first game of the new season.

Second half Canvey lost their width and Southend gained the advantage but they couldn't find their shooting boots. Drew Broughton being on particularly poor form missing at least three good chances.

Gulls Captain Ben Chenery blocked both of Southend Utd's best chance acting as the kamikazee man for their second effort.

With only 5 minutes to go Steve Parmenter, a sub himself replacing Micky Bennett on 67 minutes, and Drew Broughton were forced to be substituted after a bit of fisty-cuffs in the middle of the park. Parm's substitute - Kevin Dobinson picked up Canvey's first booking of the season three minutes later when tempers flared again.

Despite everything being thrown at them Canvey managed to hold out for their first win of the Pre-season and if we keep performing like we did today. I can safely say now that this season is going to be a good one...

That's cause it's not! This was seconds before it did! It was Ian's first game back doing them, he's a little rusty!

While i enjoy beating Southend home or away, i really was dissapointed in their style of play today. The 1st half we played the ball to feet while they kept on hitting aimless long balls. It took until midway into the 2nd half before Southend put the ball into feet and put us under pressure. I thought after the clearout and the new signings they have made Southend would be up there this season but not now. On the Canvey point of view, so far so very good, this may have been our 1st goal/win but i think we have played well in every game. I thought Duffers had a very good game which hopefully stop people moaning

EVERYONE played well yesterday and done their part.

Good to see Captain Chenery keeping everyone in-line even if he was giving Proths a right b*****king. Playing four at the back we seemed the bit much more tighter than last season. Southend rarely managed to get past our defensive line and when they did there was always someone there plus the 'Keeper. I thought both teams off-side traps worked well. Man of the Match has to go to Captain Chenery, just for taking a ball staight in the side of the jaw to deny a certain goal. 'Captain Kamikaze Chenery'

Cowan looked good in the first half, but was beaten to the ball too many times in the second. I can forgive Benno for his errors in the first-half, it's his first game back. Duffers was great, only negative thing I have to say about him yesterday was in the first-half he didn't use all the available space and run forward with the ball, opting to look for someone else and get rid of the ball quickly.

Minton, Gooden & Midgley - The Three Amigos, were on top form yesterday, having players with their ability playing in all three parts of the pitch - Left, Centre & Right is something most Conference teams would die for.

Boylan as usual ran his socks off and proved, even though he didn't score, that Boylan IS better than Bramble!

Parms for the very short time he was on before getting 'sent off' looked solid, as did Dobbo - what a player to bring on just after a bit of handbags, you'll know he wants some! and a mention must go to Crow as he did play for about 40 seconds

Damn it! I left out the Goalkeepers!!! Err, well Potter was good today he made his present felt and kept his commands clear - easier to hear as he was in front of the Yellow Army. Looked on top form in the warm-up! Ashley the same, although he wasn't troubled, I didn't like the ball going back to him as much as it did in the second half, it really slowed the game down and for about 10 minutes the game really lost it's 'umph'
