Canvey Island 0 - 7 Gillingham

Tonight Canvey tried, but the professionalism showed through.

At 4 - 0 at Half-time, it was nothing to lose for Canvey and in the last 20 minutes they actually managed to get into the game. With Ty Gooden, Neil Midgley, Neil Gregory, Ollie Berquez & Chris Duffy all having chances at goal in the second half. Lee Boylan had Canvey's best chance of the first-half vollying narrowly over from the just past the penalty spot.

Starting XI

4-1-4-1

______________Harrison

Protheroe - Chenery - Theobald - Duffy

______________Bennett

__Midgley - Kennedy - Minton - Gooden

______________Boylan

Finishing XI

____________Harrison

Smith - Chenery - Theobald - Duffy

______Kennedy - Dobinson -

___Midgley - Berquez - Gooden

________N. Gregory

A couple of sloppy goals, but most were powerful, well taken strikes by the Division 1. outfit.

Paul Shaw opened the scoring for the Gills on 18 minutes, followed by John Hills 4 minutes later. Ian Cox made it 3 half and hour into the game before Nyron Nosworthy slotted home just before half-time.

13 minutes after halftime and John Hills fired home a penalty before Shaw completed his hat-trick by popping home a rebound 11 minutes before time.

Canvey made several substitutions during the second half:

54mins

- Lee Boylan & Lee Protheroe - OFF

- Neil Gregory & Peter Smith - ON

59mins

- Micky Bennett - OFF

- Kevin Dobinson - ON

69mins

- Jeff Minton - OFF

- Ollie Berquez - ON

I have to say the 7th goal should not have been. Out of all of them this one could've been prevented the easiest - If the Goalkeeper hadn't stopped short of his one-on-one to allow the attacker to lob him!

However Ian Cox's 40 yard stike was a superb goal!!!

What was it I said "I can not see anyone shoveing past us" OOOOOPSSSS!!!!!

Some thoughts.

After such a good performance why was Gavin rested?

Why did Danny not get a look in I am sure we would have have let less in.

Why did we not see their players out wide all the time.

Why did we not pick up in the middle.

How come they got so many free headers.

How come we were so silent.

I realy do not approve of slagging of the players or manager and I know they were a class act, but even if the players got a bit over awed why did our coaching staff not make changes sooner.

Or am I being unreasonable

I wouldn't say unreasonable Mobrie, just maybe you're not considering that we have to do it all again in 48 hours?

Potter & Gav I'm sure will play on Thursday as will a few others who didn't tonight. Perhaps Crow, Dobbo, Parms, Neil Gregory, Ollie Berquez & Buzz will all start on Thursday.

I must say although we were thrashed - we didn't play bad! I mean it's not as if we gifted them the game was it? I agree though why did we lose all our width in the second half?! What a lovely return for the Manager it was tonight! Whipped 7-0

I thought David Theobald played well again tonight especially in the second-half - Glad we've offered him a deal. Buzz looks as if he might actually make it back at Canvey. 'The Three Amigos' were solid again, Boylan doesn't seem to have found his scoring touch yet, but he's getting sharper every game. Come on Lee!!!!

To be honest Gillingham are on a totally different planet from us. They've done very well in division one in recent seasons and have some very good players. At the end of the day they would probably put four or five past a division three side. The important game is Gravesend on Thursday. Let's move on and concentrate on that one.

We never had much chance of getting anything out of this game but it was a useful run out. Let's see how we match up to a Conference side on Thursday.

Still think we need some height up front, any team with big defenders we wont win anything in the air.Thats why Boylan is not getting a lot of the ball at least with greggors there he gets the knock ons and someone to put their defenders under pressure. But with the football we are playing I think we will give a few teams a hell of a beating this season.

Still think the defence play with more confidence with Potter in goal!

Oh dear. I take it from the posts that it wasn't as bad as the scoreline suggests. I did try to tell you they quite handy, though! Yellow-Army's right. Thursday is the important one, for both of us as the gap between the clubs is nowhere near as wide and we both should be able to gauge how much progress has actualy been made, if any. What sort of side do you think you'll put out? I'm not sure about us as we're still looking at a few players and trying to get the new signings settled in. I'd like to see us put out what would be our first 11 on 9/8/2003.

Do we have first 11 at the moment with so much movement it is hard to keep up.

I do belive Ollie, Greggers and Gavin deserve a couple of games before we make decision.

I cant see what Canvey fc have got out of playing this game--- I know its a run out and all that-but £9 to see your team thrashed in the rain is not something that is very enjoyable to watch. The difference in class was a little too much to overcome I fear. Roll on Thursday, hopefully be more of an even game.

Well played to Gillingham tonight, they played with pace and power and took their goals well. I wonder if on thursday Boylan will get some help up front, he runs his socks off for every minute but he is getting no support. We had no problem scoring goals last season but have now changed our system, why? We have now got Ty playing for us who can can deliver a good early cross, ideal for Gregory or another target man but all he`s got to aim for is Boylan. I think away from home the lone striker will work for us but i would like to see the partnership that done so well for us last season given another go.

P.S. I don`t think there was a lot Ash could have done about the 7th goal when there is 4 attacking and only 1 defender to help you out.

For the Gravesend game we should play 4-4-2 and give Boylan a partner up front. Midgley, Gregors, Berquez it doesn't matter who but 3/4 -Vs- Boylan ain't goint to get us anywhere!

I would like to see this line-up on Thursday but taking into account that some played a full 90 tonight then it's unlikely. I think from now on we should start with what the Management want as our starting XI for 16th August. The line-up under this one would be my Starting XI...

Thursday's Starting XI

4-4-2

____________Potter

Smith - Chenery - Cowan - Davidson

Kennedy - Dobinson - Parmenter - Gooden

_______N. Gregory - Berquez

Matt CIFC's Starting XI

____________Potter

Chenery - Theobald - Cowan - Searle (IF he signs!)

___________Dobinson

___Kennedy - Minton - Gooden

________Midgley - Boylan

Exactly what what I've said on our forum. How can you really compare yourselves to that sort of opposition. We've been stuffed by them AND Millwall and it really hasn't got us anywhere except having a run-out and getting a few more pennies in the coffers. And by the way, the reason I'm on your forum is because all my lot have have either gone to bed or are drunk, or both!
