Canvey Island 4 - 1 Gravesend & Northfleet

The Canvey fans who were willing to pay the full £9 didn't have to wait long to celebrate tonight. With a line-up much different to the 7-0 thrashing by Gillingham, Canvey got onto the scoresheet after only 4 minutes.

Sporting Canvey's new '3rd Strip' shorts (Yellow), Ollie Berquez, starting just behind Striker Neil Gregory, headed home from a tight angle to put the Gulls one-up on 4 minutes. Neil Gregory slotted home past former Thurrock Goalkeeper Alex O'Reilly three minutes later.

Berquez grabbed his second a minute later and Canvey Island 3-0 up against the Kent side after only 8 minutes. For most of the first-half Gravesend were under the cosh and Berquez grabbed his hat-trick five minutes before half-time.

After the break it was mostly fairly even stuff between both teams and James Pinnock managed to get a consalation goal for Gravesend slotting past Danny Potter just past the hour.

Canvey made several substitutions in the second half:

65mins

Neil Midgley & Jeff Minton - ON

Ty Gooden & Steve Parmenter - OFF

75mins

Chris Duffy - ON

Ollie Berquez - OFF

81mins

Bertie Brayley - ON

Neil Gregory - OFF

If you read it again! It does say that Ollie scored first, I haven't edited it either!!!

Not sure what to make of it tonight. Were we good or were Gravesend really bad? On the evidence of this performance they will really struggle in the coming season. They've lost a lot of players from last season and it was evident tonight especially in the first ten minutes that their new players need time to gel. I really fear for them next season though.

Berquez did well tonight. Took his goals well and looked very lively. Once again Ty Gooden was the star of the show, providing some great moments in the midfield. Crow looked good on the left and I think Smithy may just have got back into my good books with a decent performance.

Good little 25 minute cameo from Minton.

Difficult to assess tonight but certainly the fringe players staked a real claim for starting places especially the likes of Berquez and Crow.

Hands up, lads, we were [****!!****]! Yes, we played a fairly, but not totaly, experimental side in the first half but then you didn't have your 1st team out either. Our defence was non-existent and the 'keeper, oh God, is currently our 1st choice. To be fair, though, we have have put in far better performances but with one week to go before the start of the season, I'm losing a bit of confidence. You played some really good one-touch stuff & quite honestly, look like a team. This is gonna be your year.

Well played Canvey.... Slick passing and good all round team stuff... and you have some players over 6foot which generally helps!!!!!!! our strike force combined is probably only just 6 foot!!!!!!!

I think we did play a very experimental side and We really didn’t deserve anything from the game… was good to see second half when we played a couple of first teamers it looked better but still!!!!!!!(very worried for this season… that’s what happens when you lose your best players I spose!!)

If we sign the number 20 who was a trialist I believe then we are in trouble, he was awful!!!

Good luck and we may be passing at the end of the season!!

Blimey £9.00 for a friendly at your ground! Jeff King really is a greedy wotsit!

Why should that be much of a surprise, though? The Fatman tried to fleece the public of Southend and Canvey of 25 notes for the FA Cup game, until SUFC stepped in and told him where to go. The man's a greedy [****!!****] and I find it hard to believe that Canvey fans accept him. Or do they? For a team who think they're so good, an average of 500 is pretty pathetic so maybe they are indeed voting with their feet.

3500 attendance - wow you must be so proud....! AFC get more than that every game and they are even below us.

For a team that was once knocking on the door of the premiership (remember Barry Fry - what a man!) I think your attendance is crap. You also have a much larger area of fans to attract, in neighbouring Westcliff, Chalkwell, Leigh etc etc. We could attract fans from Pitsea/Basildon but they can't even afford houses so theres no chance they will turn up for football.

Yes you are the bigger club, Yes you do get better attendances, Yes you are in a better league than us. Congratulations on all 3. However over the past 5 years CIFC have been going up and Southend have been slowly slipping down. Don't get me wrong I would love to see Southend in the top flight - I think that they have the roots of a solid football club but at the moment you just have no direction in your team. We have a goal and the last 3 years we have been trying to get there and with a certain degree of success, your team play with no direction, they have no goal - they are happy with mid table obscurity. If Southend played with a bit of conviction and direction they have the makings of a good team - one good enough to get into the 2nd div. (best get rid of your No10 first - you can have Brayley - I think he's better than that bloke)

Was nice 2 get my moneys worth with a hefty scoreline. Wernt very pleased with the prices i heard a lot turned back at the gate. The team did look good and just to think that wernt the first team. Its good to see Ty playing well again and proving that he still has it. Didnt think much of the Green Gk kit with yellow shorts worn by potter.

Good performance from the team, thought Buzz and Crow gave good width that had been lacking recently and the defence looked solid with Gav and Theobald in the centre. Good to see Ollie getting a hat trick and then dropping back to left mid when we had the ball in defence. Felt we did well but I wonder if we would have scored as easily if Gravesend had at least their fifth choice goalie playing, because they have gotta be joking if he was their number one.

We have big, big keeper problems at the moment, mate. There's him & a 17 year old at the club as we speak and that's scary. Wilkinson's out for 6 weeks injured & Turner allegedly walked out on us 2 days ago even though he apparently was at the game. However, on the night you were the superior footballing side & totally deserved the win. Fair play to ya!
