What does Isthmian mean? Somebody asked me and the best I could come up with was "it's latin for M25" images/icons/wink.gif" border="0

Almost, but not quite.
Isthmian relates to anything situated in, or near, or on, an isthmus. An isthmus is a narrow strip of land joining two larger areas of land, the most famous being the Isthmus of Panama.
Another famous one is the Isthmus of Corinth (Greece). This was the home of the ancient Pan-Hellenic games and, in that connection, probably gives its name to our own Isthmian League.
Merv CIFC
[ 23 November 2001: This message was edited by: Merv CIFC ]

While I'm on a roll, the Latin for M25 is 'calceata quinque et viginti'
I thought everybody knew that!
Merv CIFC

Of or relating to the Isthmus of Corinth, especially with regard to the biennial Pan-Hellenic games held there in antiquity
So I assume it was to do with the amateur status of the league rather than it originating on an isthmus images/icons/smile.gif" border="0
Mind you I hear that Denis Strudwick is trying to get some Greek teams to join the Southern League
