What the f**k was that bloody big Yellow Banana all about?!

The Refereeing today was abysmal, how the Referee allows himself to be over-ruled by a Linesman is beyond me and I'm not just talking about the Gregory/Berquez/Tarr incident in the second-half.

I wasn't disappointed with our performance today. Playing 4-5-1 we can't expect sexy football very often anymore. Although playing one up front at home can be questionable. 4-4-2 all the way for me! One thing that really bugged me today was the number of players playing out of position.

JK in the middle? Cowan at left-back? Hmmm...

Today I thought the formation was:

Harrison

Smith - Chenery - Theobald - Cowan

Protheroe - Berquez - Kennedy - Minton - Gooden

Gregory.

Now they're the right players, but in the wrong positions!!

I thought it should've been:

Harrison

Smith - Theobald - Cowan - Chenery

Kennedy - Protheroe - Minton - Gooden

Gregory - Berquez

Anyone care to agree/disagree with that?

Boylan & Midley looked good when they came on, despite his good goal I was a bit diappointed with Gooden & Protheroe. I thought JK had a nightmare game in the middle - should've been on the right and I think it should be Midgley & Boylan up front against Stortford on Tuesday night!

Let the winning streak continue!!!

It took two very "generous" penalties and much profligacy from their strikers to get us of to a winning start. If Jeff/Glenn are going to persist in drawing positions out of a hat before the game, second place or worse beckons.

Leaving Boylan out is sheer lunacy.

What is it that Jeff and Glen see in Ash thats makes him number 1 against Potter,I have never seen a posting on here that prefers Ash over Potter surely we cant all be wrong!

What worries me is that even with pre season friendlies we have not scored that many goals from open play,I dont believe Olly should have been selected in place of Boylan, this happened before when Cobby played the first half of the season with Boylan on the bench and we paid the price for it.Im not looking forward much to the rest of the season if the team selection and formation carries on like today!

4-5-1 shouldn't be a formation played at home!

I'm for 4-4-2 all the way!! We've got plenty of competition for places, no-one can hold down a regular first-team place at our Club now, not even Lee Boylan. Considering Ollie Berquez has had a better Pre-Season than Boylan, I can see why he was picked for the starting line-up!

I believe Lee will start up front with Gregory on Tuesday night, hopefully we'll be playing 4-4-2. I thought our backline did ok enough today, there weren't to many major problems there except with Cowan playing on the left rather than in the middle. Theobald and he are our two biggest Centre-Halves now they should be in the MIDDLE, Smith or Ward at right-back. Crow or Chenery at left-back. (I actually think Chenery is better at right-back, he played right-back for Kettering, Cambridge, Luton etc.)

The Midfield looked a bit over crowded today, we were so close and compact that we couldn't actually build anything.

I don't mind playing 4-5-1 away if we're trying to defend a one-nil lead with 5 minutes to go or something, but it has to be 4-4-2 just to close down the Goalkeeper or Defenders. Basingstoke would've at least got a point today if their Manager had changed his tactics to match ours...

4 against 1? Surely Ernie Howe knows better than that! 3 or even 2 against 1 would've given them more attacking options and they could've reversed the score-line!

I do not like JK playing the middle!!! He has to play on the right where he's more effective. I've already posted above how today's team should've lined up, I think we would've created more oppertunities.

Everyone around me at Park Lane today could see where our faults lay - they should've been fixed sooner!! Our three subs managed to make us look a bit more lively - natural players in their natural positions...

Ok we won, so I can't really knock today's performance/tectics/line-up...BUT Lets improve it for Stortford!!!

Cmon Richard, the gods were with us today! what I witnessed wasn't nice to watch. Selection and tactics has to be questioned, why is it the strike pairing has to include Neil Gregory. I thought Boylan and Berqueze together last year were awesome and we had our greatest number of goals scored when they were teamed together. Jeff, did the same the last two seasons, failed to start with Boylan, thats crazy, and I make it right about the keeper situation too. He shouldn't be toying with team especially at home.

OK the result was there but the style of play made a mockery of the pre-season.

im inlcined to agree with matt on this.. still its 3 points and we never get those till our 3 rd game normally ;-) ..

heard on the radio on the way to the game that we have lost only 6 of our last 65 home league games.. 3 of those were the opening home game of the season..!

If Gregory is left out who wins/holds up any long balls? Boylan always works his socks off but he can`t be expected to win balls in the air, Berqueze has played well all pre season and so earned his place today but he is not a target man. Unless we are going to sign another big striker Gregory has to start ever game.

There should rarely have to be any long balls upfield. Everyone knows that Canvey play much better on the deck with ball to feet. Our attacks should be built up from the back, wave after wave. That's why I like Potter in goal, his primary distribution of the ball seems to be a throw out to either of the full-backs. The added bonus is that he does this quickly while the opposition have either their back to the ball and/or haven't marked out men up properly yet. This leaves the full-back with time and space to build something. The ball should really travel along the floor, from Defence through the Midfield to the Attackers. Boylan with his pace best suits this as he is quick and can leave defenders for dust as can The Three Amigos. The long ball is played by Conference teams with bully-boy tactics. One thing I noticed with Basinstoke yesterday was that they loved that 60 yard pass across the whole of the pitch. Usually it was from right to left. Now sometimes we should be doing that, when we know we have players that can keep the width like Buzz, Crow, JK & Gooden if these are found to be in acres of space then the ball should be played to them so they can carry on the attack, (A reason why Scott Forbes rarely saw much action last season - he was left all on his own out on the left). Playing the compact nice ball to feet stuff is great, but not with 5 in Midfield, 4 yes, 5, no. We were stumbling over our own players yesterday and getting closed down quickly.

Basingstoke were tricky opposition to handle yesterday, we could've had someone easier, we could've had someone harder. But is was the first game of the season and things can get better!!

COME ON YOU YELLOWS!!!!!!

The long ball does not have to be a hit and hope ball! Every good team needs somebody up front who they can be rely on to hold the ball up and link with the runners, Alan Shearer has made a very good living doing just that. If we continue with 1 up front (i hope not) then Gregory is our only option in that position.

I thought Saturday was a typical seasons opener. We played OK and will improve as a team over the next few weeks. I'm not sure Cowan is a full back, he looked very clumsy going forward down the left, he surely has to play in the middle. I also agree with matt that you should not play 4-5-1 at home. I think Boylan is the best player in the Ryman league and must play, however his strike partner is an issue. I never have been a big Berquez fan, however i think he would make a great sub, also greggors is just getting to slow and immobile for a team who attacks so much. I said it last season and I'll say it again, too win the league we need a new target man.

Not bad Canv, but Wardy at left-back? Wardy has never played left-back!

If you really wanted to shake things up a bit, you could even try

Potter/Harrison

Chenery/Smith - Theobald/Ward - Cowan - Davidson

Kennedy/Protheroe - Minton/Parms/Dobbo/Benno - Gooden/Duffy

Midgley - Gregory - Boylan/Berquez

4-3-3, we would be dominated in the Centre of Midfield but make more attacking chances

But that aside...

Line-up for tomorrow night:-

Potter

Smith - Theobald - Cowan - Chenery

Kennedy - Dobinson - Minton - Gooden

Gregory - Boylan

SUBS:

Davidson, (if he's back) if not then Parmenter

Protheroe

Duffy

Berquez

Harrison

COME ON YOU MARSH RATS!!!

or using the undoubted footballing intelligence of our players, switch from 442 to 451 to 433 to 352 at the drop of a hat with out even telling the opposition depending on what was happening in the game.. still like to see us get it forward quicker (it doent need to be the hoof) when we break up the opposition attacks.. ok its not so important against basingstoke who came to play some footy but wait till ZZfleet turn up..

also i noticed a good spell in the 2nd half where we defended for a time keeping 'stoke out by the half way line..
