Only 289 Fans!

Super Daz said, on 3rd March -

"Think about this Canvey fans - all 289 of you;"
I think he was trying to make some sort of cheap point about the low turnout for the recent Heybridge home game. He doesn't want to admit that this was an exceptional turnout due to the game being organised at very short notice following the postponement at Yeovil (others on the G&N board have tried to suggest that the game being organised so quickly was down to bribery or worse! How sad.) In fact this fixture rarely attracts many, in spite of it being a local derby. Only 312 came to the same fixture last season and only 389 the season before. Strange that but certainly no indication of how many regular Canvey fans there really are.
Lety's take a look at attendance over the whole season for both clubs -
CI have an average home gate of 668 (second only to Aldershot), G&N only have 609 (fourth behind Billericay). Both figures can be distorted by extremes, so if you take out the highest and lowest extremes from both sets of figures you get CI average of 592 and G&N only 570.
At away games it's obviously Aldershot who are way in front, but of the rest of the pack CI have the highest away average of 637, leading G&N who have 604.
CI biggest home gate was 2111 (playing G&N incidentally) whereas G&N highest is only 1216 (until we come, probably).
CI's home gate was 1000+ on three occasions, G&N's only once.
Again, take Alsershot out of the equation and you find that the following clubs enjoyed their biggest gate of the season so far thanks to the visit from CI. They were; Aldershot, Billericay, Sutton, Kingstonian, Grays, Purfleet, Hampton, Boreham Wood, Heybridge and Croydon.
For G&N the highest gates have only been recorded at Canvey, Chesham, Hendon and Enfield.
I don't think that Super Daz is totally justified in his subtle suggestion that Canvey only have 289 fans. There are probably nearly that number of G&N fans who can't stop talking about and thinking about Canvey. Take a look on their discussion board!
Both clubs are well supported by Ryman standards with Canvey just edging it. Then you have to remember that Canvey not only have the quantity of supporters but they also have the quality. Where else would you meet a nicer, better informed, more courteous or sympathetic bunch of fans?

(If that's not sticking my head above the parapet I don't know what is!)
Merv CIFC

Merv you have very good and realistic way of getting the true facts across. Such a shame that so many G&N supporters keep making claims one way or other without checking out the facts before blabbing off, but then its great to shoot them down in flames, well done 'Gold Star' for you my boy!!

Well put Merv, of course any variables can distort the stats, and obviously fans will turn out in force for the bigger occassion, but I must say what really amazed me about the recent Canvey vs G&N game was the amount of away support. It was expected that a lot of home fans would turn up that night after the cup heroics, to witness a top of the table clash, but on the occassions I've visited G&N at home im sure there's never been as many at their place as they brought away to us. Even previous home games at the Lane there has never been such volumes of G&N supporters. My point is that before Car Jam and others acuse Canvey of being a fashionable, Monied-up, flavour of the month club perhaps the G&N stats should be more closley scrutinised.
That said, I suppose it proves that its not just on the pitch that both CIFC & G&N could hold their own in the conference. May the best (or luckiest) club win.
Im sure CIFC fans will turn out in force when G&N host in a few weeks. Any volunteers to streak ?

Listen Dave, you didn't see our super-streaker Ian at the Port Vale game. Believe me, it's best he streaks with the lights OFF.
Merv CIFC

Fair enough.
I commissioned some photos of the streakers at your place for NOTN but the bar steward gave them to the local paper and they didn't use them. mad.gif" border="0
Perhaps I can grab them for the week you come to us as it will be topical again. tongue.gif" border="0

Both figures can be distorted by extremes, so if you take out the highest and lowest extremes from both sets of figures you get CI average of 592 and G&N only 570.
***But we have played less home games. When we've added to our totals by playing our games in hand, we'll be ahead or pretty damn near it. Anyway, there's only one table I want to be top of at the end of the season, and it ain't the attendance one!

"Having said that I wouldn't be suprised if there were in excess of 3,000 on the 26th."
That would be nice to see Dave.
Merv CIFC
BTW We still have a few games that will boost our home average as well, so it all comes out even in the end. Bedford are coming on Saturday and they always bring a few, plus the club is doing a Bring a Kid for a Quid promotion.
Then we have our local derby with Billericay - that is always well attended. Plus there will be a massive crowd at our last home game of the season against Sutton on 20th April. Alan Turvey is coming to present us with the Championship medals. With good publicity there will be a massive crowd for that, probably all ticket but as you are a mate, I'll see if I can get you a couple.

That's kind of you, but we will have won the league the week before (7 points clear with 2 to go) Our ground is bigger so it won't be all ticket smile.gif" border="0 but I'll organise a complimentary for you and Ian if you like.

Put more simply; if there were a total of 1000 fans at 4 games, the average attendance would be 250. If, on the other hand, there were 1000 fans at 5 games, the average attendance would be 200.
Please e-mail me with the bit that you don't understand.
Merv CIFC

I think that what he is trying to say Merv is that the games that we haven't played yet will attract more fans than the ones we have played, thus boosting our average. He probably has a point, but we have a number of midweek home matches and we only got 636 last night, so it may not boost it too much.
Having said that I wouldn't be suprised if there were in excess of 3,000 on the 26th.

When I said '289 of you' it was not implying that that was your total number of supporters, merely a comment at what most would deem a low turn out.
Whilst the fixture may traditionally attract a low turn out, considering that you were top of the league, surely a figure a great deal higher should have been expected? If we had that sort of turn out for a league game, even for a midweek one, we would think that something was seriously wrong! There must be a lot of 'big game only' specialists in your ranks!
Hope that clears the confusion.....looks like the season going to go down to the wire - the good news is that we've been playing bad whilst still winning - can't wait until we hit form again!
Take care & see you on the 26th. shocked.gif" border="0
P.S. Thought that I'd better register (with a different name) considering the problems with those who are not!

Forget the 2, you'll be glad to get 89 in a few years time. That would be a good crowd for the Essex League ha! ha ! ha!) P.S will you be selling off the pile of scrap wood at the Park Lane end of your "ground" at the end of the season - I need a new shed.
