CAMBRIDGESHIRE INVITATION CUP Semi Final

2-1 Ely City v Royston Town

A groundhopper's view

Cambridgeshire Invitational Cup - Semi Final

Ely City 2 Vs. 1 Royston Town

Admission: £6

Attendance: 117

Utter rubbish. Royston started the match by diving all over the place and kicking Ely about in between. Ely didn't take long to follow suit. At half time with the scores at 1-1 (header for Royston, then a penalty for Ely), I hoped things would improve but they didn't. I found the game got worse as players continued to throw themselves about and kick their opponents. Probably the worst game I've seen this season. Frankly, I expected better from these two teams given their high status in their respective leagues. Good attendance with Royston fans making the trip and even a bit of 'singing' (if you can call it that) from Ely fans.

The Unwin ground is decent enough, but wholly unremarkable. There's nothing special to justify making the visit just for the ground. If you do visit though, take note that the ground was not designed to be walked to - at least as far as I could tell. There's two A-roads to cross if you come from the city centre and then you have to walk along an unlit road with traffic and no footpath. Not exactly practical. However, there are plenty of sports played in the vicinity, with Ely Rugby club and tennis amongst them.

Ely itself is a beautiful city and the cathedral is nothing short of stunning (are cathedrals ever anything but?), there looked to be a few nice pubs in the centre, though I didn't go in as I wasn't drinking.

Langford 3-1 Ampthill.

Another below second half performance unfortunately, only good news was Hoddeson not being able to take advantage

It's going to be squeaky bum time between now and 28 April isn't it

I don't see why we should worry,we have to lose at least 4 matches and Hoddesdon would have to win all of their games, and they are running out of games fast. No, we are not worried, all we have to do is start to play our simple passing game again and we will be fine.

Former No.9 - Well stranger things have happened in football haven’t they, I remember Leeds were miles clear of Arsenal in 1970/1971 going into the last month of the season and Arsenal won the league by a point. Hoddesdon should walk their remaining five games against Amersham, London Lions, Kings Langley, Stony Stratford and Sun Postal Sports and you won’t have it all your own way at Wodson Park, London Colney and St Albans City Reserves.

Tuesday 20th March

PREMIER DIVISION

4-2 Holmer Green v Hatfield Town

A report on this one from another Forum:

Holmer Green 4-2 Hatfield Town

Spartan South Midlands Premier Division

They say that cheats never prosper and thankfully last night Hatfield Town didn't.

First half fairly even until Homer were awarded a penalty, the Number 2 went straight through the man to get the ball, whioch he complained vermently for the next five minutes, he was booked, lucky it wasn't red as the Holmer dstriker was on to a scoring opportunity. Penalty ready to be taken with the referee shouting three times "stay out of the area", guess what happened next, three Hatfield players encroached and the kick saved. Re-take. Second time of asking spot kick scored, only one Hatfield player running in followed by a Holmer player.

Harfield then equalised just before half time with a free kick from 20 yards into the top corner. Six minutes into the second half hatfield went in front, the home keeper making a massive misjudgement and the ball bouncing over him and the Hatfield 11 had the easy task of heading it in.

Now for the fun part. Hatfield "6" cleared the ball from the by line out for a throw in, nobody else touched it, but he claimed otherwise, then came a volley of effs and this to the referee, who rightly booked him. Within minutes though, he had received his marching orders. The ball was crossed from the right and was heading out of play, a Holmer player slid in to prevent the throw and took ball and man, to which "6" took exception, he then stood nose to nose with thw Holmer player and then dived on the floor as if a sniper was in the bushes. The linesman on my side had a clear view of what he did, so Hatfield were reduced to 10 men, richly deserved as he no more than a cheating bar steward.

Holmer then pressed for the equaliser, this came on 88 minutes as a corner wasn't cleared, they then got what I would have thought a winner in the 90th minute as it was fired in from 25 yards into the top corner off the bar and post. Two minutes into injury time and Hatfield are reduced to 9, a simple foul on the half way line, Hatfield's 14 retaliated and the same linesman saw it. Straight red card. From the resulting free kick, Holmer Green broke and added a fourth deep into injury time. As the 14 was sent off the Number 2, remember him, shouted "this ref is s**t" a bit like his teams behaviour.

I always watch these games as a neutral but after the number 6's antics, I have never wanted a side to lose so much.
