Exeter City have been thrown a lifeline ahead of next weekend's crunch FA Cup clash against Gravesend by signing three players on non-contract terms.

 

Former Manchester United starlet Andy Taylor, ex-QPR and England under-20 defender Lyndon Duncan and Yeading keeper Matt Hodgson have all been recruited to ease the club's injury crisis.

 

The Grecians already have Martin Thomas, James Coppinger, Les Afful and James Bittner sidelined through injury - and the problem was compounded at the weekend when defender Chris Todd limped out of the club's 2-1 win at Accrington Stanley.

 

With a transfer embargo strangling permanent attempts to swell the numbers, boss Eamonn Dolan has been sweating over whether he will be able to cobble together a team for next week's Cup showdown

 

"We have picked up another injury in Toddy and we would have been literally struggling to get an 11 out for the FA Cup clash," he warned.

 

"We are delighted to get more bodies on board. Any sort of addition in squad numbers is a tremendous boost for us."

 

Dolan and his management team were under the illusion that the FA had blocked them from recruiting players on non-contract terms.

 

But director of football Steve Perryman and City director Julian Tagg contacted FA chiefs to discover if the game's ruling body would budge on the issue.

 

And on Friday night they were finally given the green light to bring in the new faces.

 

"This all came about due to the tenacity of Steve Perryman and Julian Tagg." added Dolan.

 

"The FA have seen that we are being decent and given us permission to bring these faces in on a non contract basis.

 

"A big thanks must go out to Steve and Julian who have achieved the impossible."

My understanding is that the deadline for signing players to be eligible for this round of the FA Cup was 3:00pm last Friday, which is why the Adam Miller deal was rushed through.

 

Are we going to have another Leon Knight style arguement?

Although the article says they didn't get permission from the FA to make the signings until Friday night, all the players were registered on Thursday and so are eligible to play on Saturday.

 

Taylor is likely to start.
