Today marked the opening match at the Prospect Stadium, as the old Canvey ground has been renamed following a three year sponsorship deal with a local college.

Hornchurch got off to a bad start when they lost Aaron Gayle after just two minutes with an ear injury. Aaron went to hospital for stitches and Leon McKenzie came on.

A first time drive by Alex Bentley was fumbled by keeper Andre Foster and the ball was scrambled away following a corner, and McKenzie broke powerfully through the middle, and was denied a goal by an excellent Foster save just a minute later.

Dean Mason then hammered the ball high over the bar from a free kick, the ball almost ending up in the Thames.

A James Hawes shot was saved by Joe Woolley, who immediately played the ball deep upfield, for McKenzie to chase, but Foster rushed out of his goal to kick clear.

Mason then made ground on the left wing and his hard cross into the goalmouth was cleared by Joe Anderson, at the expense of a corner.

McKenzie again worked his way through the defence but hit his shot narrowly wide of the post.

After dominating most of the match Hornchurch went ahead after Foster had saved well from McKenzie, and LEWIS SMITH was quick to follow up to place the ball firmly into the net.

An Ashley Dumas corner was comfortably cleared by Paul Goodacre, and Smith and Tuohy combined well but were thwarted by Rickie Hayles, who conceded a corner, which Sam Cutler placed too low into the middle.

Joe Anderson almost increased the lead with a long range shot which skimmed the post, but in stoppage time Ashley Dumas moved down the left wing and his cross was headed home by JAY CURRAN.

It was a much changed Hornchurch team in the second half, with substitutions starting in the 52nd minute and continuing until Andy Tomlinson came on in the 77th minute.

A minute after the interval a timely tackle by Elliot Styles stopped Dean Mason, and Elliot was again in action soon afterwards, this time preventing Danny Heale from breaking through.

Martin Tuohy then fired inches wide of the goal, whilst Joe Woolley held a corner from Dumas at the other end.

Lewis Smith was then denied a goal by an excellent reaction save by Andre Foster.

Fola Orilonishe came on and immediately got into the action with a fine run on the left wing, which culminated in a near perfect centre to McKenzie, whose header went agonizingly wide of the post.

Canvey could have taken the lead when Kevin Dobinson slotted the ball through to Jay Curran, who rounded Woolley and glided the ball towards the empty net – but Joe Anderson calmly moved across to clear the ball off the line.

Hayes intercepted a Lewis Smith cross which would otherwise have given McKenzie a scoring chance, but Canvey took the led on 78 minutes when RYAN EDGAR fired in an opportunist shot from outside the area.

Reiss Noel almost leveled when he headed just over the bar from a Jon Hunt corner, and the match ended in controversial fashion when Tambeson Eyong went speeding towards goal, and was blatantly checked by a defender. Tambeson still managed to slot the ball through to Orilonishe, whose shot skimmed the post, but the referee took no action against the defender, and chose instead to book Tambeson who had been denied a goal scoring opportunity, and who made his feelings known to the referee.
