SALISBURY 2 HORNCHURCH 1

Salisbury City no longer play virtually in the centre of the city, but instead now play at a ground three miles out at what was once the village of Old Sarum, but this is rapidly losing any character it once had thanks to the myriad of housing developments which threaten to engulf the entire area. Light aircraft from a nearby airfield continually buzzed around the ground, which was neat and tidy, the only minus point being the pitch, which was not to everyone’s liking, and the high price of admission.

On the hottest day of the year, it was something of a difficult journey, with some lengthy traffic jams, including one massive snarl up two miles short of Stonehenge.

Hornchurch quickly learned that any hesitation in this league could be just as quickly punished, as Jamie White broke through the middle, and was only thwarted by a well timed tackle by Paul Goodacre, who slid the ball off for a corner.

Hornchurch came back strongly, when Alex Bentley played a long ball up the field for Martin Tuohy, and the resulting cross was deflected out for a corner. Sam Cutler took the kick and the ball was partly cleared, but ran to Joe Anderson whose first time shot was blocked. The ball rebounded high up field, and Daniel Fitchett threatened to break through but instead won a free kick, which was floated into the goalmouth and Bentley headed the ball out for a corner.

Play continued to swing back and forth and Hornchurch went close with a free kick, taken by Cutler, whose shot swerved around the post.

The ball often seemed to skid off the pitch and from a massive punt up field by Willem Puddy, Reiss Noel had to react quickly and he headed the ball out for a corner, which Theo Lewis swerved alarmingly towards goal, where Goodacre confidently headed clear.

Salisbury almost took the lead when Fitchett made ground on the right and send over a low cross into the middle, where Jamie White flicked the ball goalwards, and Joe Woolley made an excellent reflex save to turn the ball around the post. And again it was Goodacre who headed away the corner from Lewis.

Hornchurch took the lead in the 43rd minute, after some quick thinking by Frankie Curley, who played the ball into the path of MARTIN TUOHY, who ran on to glide the ball home.

A minute later it could have been two, when Curley again slotted the ball through, this time to Leon McKenzie, who ran through but saw his shot well saved by Puddy.

Salisbury started strongly after the interval, when White opened up the play with a good pass to Fitchett, and his shot was saved in spectacular style by Woolley, who flung himself at the feet of the advancing forward to gather the ball.

And when Callum Hart found Christopher McPhee a minute later, and his shot dipped just over the bar.

Hornchurch almost increased their lead when Tuohy ran on to Curley’s cross, but hit his shot a fraction too high and over the bar.

Hornchurch kept coming forward and Lewis Smith won a corner, which Cutler sent across to Simon Glover, and his shot rebounded off a defender for another corner, which Cutler again sent over but the linesman indicated that the ball had gone out of play for a goal kick.

Lewis then gathered the ball on the left and switched the play to Anderson on the other side of the field, and Anderson ran down the wing and squared the ball to Cutler whose shot was heading towards goal, until keeper Puddy made a fine save.

Salisbury drew level after Stuart Sinclair had combined well with Fitchett, whose shot was saved at full stretch by Woolley. The danger appeared to have passed, but the ball was returned into the goalmouth and JAMIE WHITE reacted first to force the ball into the net.

Hornchurch continued to threaten, and Lewis Smith went close with a solo run and shot, which Puddy did well to hold.

And when Cutler crossed into the middle, Smith was again close to finding the net, when his shot cannoned off a defender for a corner.

Hornchurch appeared capable of holding on to the point, or even taking all three, but the match was decided when some slack defending allowed RYAN BRETT to hit the ball home when he was left unmarked on the edge of the area.

James Love came on for the limping Anderson, and Bentley switched to left back, and Michael Spencer came into midfield in place of McKenzie, but it was when Jon Hunt came on with just a few minutes to play, Hornchurch again pressed forward, with Salisbury finding it difficult to contain Hunt’s pin point passes. The match ended with Hornchurch winning a corner, which was taken perhaps too quickly, and the ball was cleared up field to the relief of the jittery home crowd.

Hornchurch O - yes, there were a lot of free kicks taken in the wrong place - also a lot of time wasting by the home side which went unpenalised. A disappoointing result, but an encouraging start. Stanard is a good deal higher in this league, and they will need time to adapt.
