HORNCHURCH 1 BOREHAM WOOD 1

Hornchurch started confidently, and created the first chance of the match when a free kick from Joe Anderson was well held by keeper James Russell.

A goal almost resulted when Alex Bentley made ground on the right and played the ball deep into the goalmouth where Martin Tuohy’s headed beat Russell but was ruled out for an infringement.

Hornchurch kept up the pressure and a corner from Sam Cutler found Paul Goodacre, who directed his header a fraction too high.

The visiting defence was opened up when Tuohy flicked the ball through to Leon McKenzie, who raced towards goal, but hit his shot into the side netting.

Boreham Wood always looked dangerous but rarely threatened, their closest attempt being a shot from Graeme Montgomery which went wide of the goal.

They had another opportunity to open the score shortly afterwards when David Hutton found himself unmarked and in front of goal, but he skied his shot high over the bar.

Callum Reynolds then split the home defence with a good pass to Chez Isaac, who was forced to shoot quickly thanks to the rapid reaction of Reiss Noel and the ball sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Hornchurch came back, and when Joe Anderson dummied a free kick, Lewis Smith stepped up to hammer the ball goalwards, where Russell made a spectacular save to turn the ball around the post. From the resulting corner, Cutler picked out Anderson, and again it was Russell who came to the rescue with a fine save.

LEWIS SMITH had threatened on several occasions, and he opened the scoring when his lengthy solo run ended with a well directed shot which eluded Russell in the Boreham Wood goal.

Boreham Wood put the home defence under pressure in the second half, though it was Hornchurch who nearly increased their lead when Anderson gained possession just outside his own area, and set off on a 60 yard run up field, exchanging passes with Lewis Smith before heading towards goal, where it took a last ditch tackle by Charlie O’Loughlin to prevent a goal.

It was Anderson who again opened up the defence with a long pass to Frankie Curley who flicked the ball on to McKenzie, who fired wide.

Joe Woolley was in action with an excellent save when he turned a header around for a corner from which O’Loughlin headed wide.

Boreham Wood drew level in controversial circumstance when a somewhat questionable free kick was awarded. It took some time before the kick was taken, as the referee handed out two lengthy lectures, and the defence was caught out completely when CHARLIE O’LOUGHLIN came in unchallenged to head home.

Hornchurch came back quickly and a Simon Glover chip was deflected for a corner, which Cutler took and which ended in a goalmouth scramble before the ball was eventually cleared.

Hornchurch put the visitors under pressure and Lewis Smith on three occasions went close, as did Sam Cutler, whilst Joe Woolley made a good save from Inih Effiong at the other end.

Reiss Noel then did well to clear an inswinging corner from Montgomery, but Hornchurch then lost Martin Tuohy with an injury, and Elliot Styles came on, leaving Hornchurch with just one player up front at McKenzie had already been substituted for Jon Hunt.

But it was a Hunt pass which led to the last scoring chance, when the ball fell neatly for Cutler, who however hit his shot over the bar.

Good game, some of the best passing I've seen Hornchurch do in a game. It was a joy to watch on occasions.

Thought we deserved the win, Boreham did threaten on occasions with one outstanding save from Wooley.

They came more into it second half.

Good to get off the mark though.

From the two games I've seen so far, I don't think we are out of our depth in this league.

Massive test on Saturday, Dover are one of the favourites to go up and that game will be a real test of our credentials.

the twit on twitter is just that.

I belive that we wont go down, if we do then at least we can say that we tried and it didnt work for us this time.

Any way, we well dwel on that if it happens.

It will take us a few games to find our feet at this level and settle. Not one team is going to walk this league and its not going to be won after 2 games.

Thought we played some amazing football last night and it was good to watch.

Well fought point, unlucky we didnt get more. :applause:

Pleased for him, definitely deserved to be playing at a higher level, hopefully Boreham Wood will be the next step to bigger and better things.

.....and if Vale Farm is good enough for Claudio Caniggia, it's good enough for me!
