HORNCHURCH 0 WESTON-SUPER-MARE 0

Player news – Jon Hunt has joined Concord, Les Thompson has joined Maidstone, Joe Anderson has been released.

Hornchurch had high hopes of gaining their first Conference win today against Weston-Super-Mare, but when Lewis Smith fired a free kick inches wide in the first minute, this turned out to be the only real opportunity that either team created in a first half, dominated by both defences.

The visitors had little to offer, apart from one cross which Reiss Noel turned out for a corner, and although Kane Ingham neatly picked out an unmarked Jamie Price, the resulting shot cannoned off a defender.

Leon McKenzie almost opened up the defence with a good flick on to Martin Tuohy, but keeper Lloyd Irish quickly ran on to gather before Tuohy could get his shot away.

Lewis Smith fired a volley a fraction over the bar, whilst at the other end Ingram won a corner, which he placed deep into the goalmouth for Paul Goodacre to head out for a follow up corner, which this time was headed away by Elliot Styles.

But the visitors did not create anything that looked likely to end up in the net, apart from one long clearance by keeper Irish which dropped into the waiting hands of Joe Woolley at the other end of the ground.

Lewis Smith rounded off a lackluster first half with a hard drive which was well fielded by Irish.

The second half was a big improvement, though somewhat one way, as the visitors rarely threatened. Hornchurch almost opened the scoring in the first minute when Smith slotted the ball through to Tuohy, who ran on and lobbed the keeper, only for the ball to drop onto the roof of the net.

A Cutler free kick was headed back into the middle by Styles, to Smith, whose shot was too high and the ball cleared the bar.

And when Leon McKenzie was brought down in full flight by Brett Trowbridge, the latter was fortunate to walk away without a card, and Smith’s free kick came to nothing.

In a rare sortie into the home half Weston-Super-Mare won a corner which was taken by Pepperell and which was comfortably headed away by Goodacre.

Tambeson Eyong came on for McKenzie and Hornchurch created more space down the right wing. And it was Eyong who ran through from a Smith pass to win a corner, which Cutler took and the ball fell nicely for Alex Bentley, whose first time shot cannoned away to safety.

Another Smith free kick found Goodacre whose header was turned away for a corner. Cutler swerved the ball over and again it was Goodacre first to the ball this time his header being well saved by Irish.

A Matt Villis free kick was deflected for a corner which came to nothing, and then Trowbridge, who had escaped an earlier booking, was booked in an incident with Cutler, who was also booked.

Aaron Gayle came on for Cutler, and it was his pass to Lewis Smith that saw the only goal of the day, but Smith’s well struck shot was ruled out for an earlier infringement.

In the minutes added on for the many stoppages, a Smith free kick was headed on by Goodacre to Tuohy, whose shot was turned around the post by Irish. Smith took the corner, Bentley’s shot was deflected out for another corner, and this time Smith’s second corner in a matter of seconds was headed clear as the whistle went for time.
