BROMLEY 4 HORNCHURCH 0

Every team is entitled to a poor performance once a season – and this was the one. The build up to the match was not helped when Paul Goodacre twisted his ankle during the warm up, and this caused a major reshuffle in the defence. James Love came in at right back, with Alex Bentley switching to left back and Michael Spencer in midfield. Elliot Styles took over Goodacre’s role in defence.

Net result was initial confusion and Hornchurch fell behind after just three minutes when the defence was opened up with a low cross from the left which was turned into the net by an unmarked PIERRE JOSEPH-DUBOIS.

The Hornchurch defence continued to be opened up and it was no real surprise when the home side went further in front, then Michael Malcolm’s corner found an unmarked RICHARD PACQUETTE who headed home.

Another Malcolm corner was cleared, whilst at the other end Joe Welch in the home goal had little to do, and did not have a single shot on target.

The defence was again caught out when Marlon Patterson took a throw in which was immediately crossed into the middle for the unmarked PIERRE JOSEPH-DUBOIS to slot home.

Hornchurch began to get a grip in midfield although the home defence dealt confidently with everything that came in their direction, and Hornchurch then lost Martin Tuohy shortly before half time, to be replaced by Tambeson Eyong.

At the interval Aaron Gayle replaced Leon McKenzie, and although Eyong began to worry the home defence, it was Bromley who went further ahead. A Malcolm corner was headed out for a follow up corner and this time the ball curled into the goalmouth, and Reiss Noel’s challenge led to the referee pointing quickly to the penalty spot, and RICHARD PACQUETTE calmly slotted the penalty kick into the net.

The final substitution saw Joey May replace Simon Glover, and the performance of May in midfield evened up proceedings, with Eyong also creating some openings up front.

It was a Love – May – Eyong combination of moves which led to Hornchurch’s first shot of the night, when Eyong centred to Gayle, whose shot went over the bar.

And when Frankie Curley slotted the ball through to Lewis Smith a scoring opportunity was denied when Lewis was crowed out at the edge of the area by two defenders.

With play now much more even, another Malcolm corner was cleared, and when Love sent Smith away on the right, the resulting cross cannoned off a defender for Hornchurch’s first corner of the night, taken by Michael Spencer but headed clear by Moses Swaibu.

Hornchurch had a chance to pull a goal back late on in the half when Lewis Smith’s free kick was headed powerfully against the post by Styles. The ball rebounded to Gayle whose follow up shot was well saved by Welch.

The performance of Alex Bentley at left back suggested that he will make a more than adequate replacement for Joe Anderson, now with Billericay, whilst Joey May gave a very encouraging performance when he came on early in the second half.
