BILLERICAY 3 HORNCHURCH 1

This was a poor performance, aided somewhat by two extremely contentious decisions. The injury hit Hornchurch side selected itself, but found it difficult to adapt to the bumpy and sloping playing surface.

A very slow start with neither team really getting to grips with the conditions, and it was the home side who made the first move when Luke I’Anson placed the ball ahead of Greg Oates whose dipping centre was palmed away by Joe Woolley.

Hornchurch were slow to get into the game, though almost broke through when Frankie Curley won the ball in midfield but his run at goal was quickly stopped, with a tackle which earned the first of the many free kicks awarded to Hornchurch. Lewis Smith stepped up to slam the free kick into the wall, and although the ball rebounded back to Smith he again hammered it into the wall.

Lewis Smith was then chopped down three times in succession, all by different players, but the free kicks were wasted, and the home side took the lead when Sam Cutler, seemingly with plenty of time to spare, lost possession close to the half way line, and I’Anson played the ball along the right to Sam Lechmere, who, unmarked, crossed the ball into the middle for ALEX OSBORN, also unmarked, to glide home.

A Lechmere corner came to nothing, and a Lewis Smith free kick again rebounded harmlessly off the wall.

An I’Anson run earned another corner which Lechmere played deep for Rob Swaine, whose free header went high and wide.

And then came the incident which arguably turned the match Billericay’s way. Frankie Curley was penalized for a tackle on I’Anson, who appeared to kick out at Curley. This was the signal for a mass onslaught by the home side on Curley, with Chris Wild leading the charge. We firmly expected two red cards, one for I’Anson and one for Wild. Instead we had two yellows, one for Curley, and the other for Wild.

Lewis Smith was again the victim of a mistimed tackle and this time the referee waved a yellow card at Duran Reynolds, but the move had been stopped and the free kick came to nothing.

The rest of the half had little to recommend it apart from a couple of corners from Lechmere and a free kick by Glen Poole which Woolley held, and was then bundled over. The whistle went for what all thought to be a free kick to Hornchurch, but instead a corner was awarded.

Andy Tomlinson came on for Cutler at half time, and Hornchurch came more into the match. Reiss Noel played a long ball out to Tambeson Eyong who weaved his way through and then touched the ball back to Lewis Smith, whose shot went narrowly wide of the goal.

And when Tomlinson sent Smith off on another of his trademark runs across field, Smith cut back inside and his shot was well held by Dale Brightly.

Nathan Green almost broke through on the left and was stopped by James Love, at the expense of a corner, which came to nothing as Paul Goodacre headed away firmly and confidently.

Chris Wild, perhaps fortunate to still remain on the pitch after the first half incident, started a move which led to two successive corners, both cleared, by Noel and Goodacre respectively.

And just when Hornchurch were getting back into the match, a throw in from the left reached SAM LECHMERE who crashed the ball home through a crowded penalty area.

Time for changes – Leon McKenzie and Aaron Gayle on for Simon Glover and `martin Tuohy, who had twice in a few minutes needed treatment.

Billericay won another corner which Woolley held under pressure, and Brightly did well to save from Lewis Smith who had set off on a solo run through the middle.

McKenzie and Gayle then combined to win a corner, which Tomlinson swung over and the ball fell in front of Michael Spencer, whose shot went closer to the corner post than to the goal post.

Junior Luke mad a good run on the right to square the ball to Jacek Magdzinski, whose header went wide.

Billericay then almost broke through thanks to a weak back pass from Love to Woolley, who however grabbed the ball as the home forward swung a boot at it, and cleared the danger – or so it seemed. Only for the referee to consider it to be a pass back, despite Woolley and Love protesting that the home player had touched the ball first.

The indirect free kick led to the third goal, thanks to the wall deciding to step aside and this let a delighted SAM LECHMERE free to hammer the ball into the net.

Hornchurch pulled a goal back after Gayle and Eyong combined to send LEWIS SMITH away, and Lewis raced on to crash the ball home.

Hornchurch could have had a second goal but Smith was hauled down by Swaine, who, having twice earlier been spoken to by the referee, this time received a yellow card for his efforts, as did Lewis Smith, who was clearly unhappy about being denied a goal scoring opportunity.

Controversial decisions aside, Billericay deserved to progress into the next round.
