In atrocious weather conditions, Hornchurch had the better of the first half play, which was largely confined to the visitors’ half of the pitch.

Hornchurch had chances to take an early lead, when Kris Lee was through, to be thwarted by the first of a number of excellent saves by Tony Roberts, who then turned quickly to touch a shot from Jamie Richards around the post.

Billy McMahon had little to do, apart from a shot by Danny Shipp, and another from Paul Cobb, which hit the side netting. But with Jim McFarlane, Jamie Southon and Danny Glozier sound in defence, and Colin McBride dominating the midfield, the home goal was rarely threatened.

Hornchurch took the lead with a well placed shot from MARTIN CARTHY, and Roberts saved other goal bound shots from Lee and Glen Poole, and Kris Lee’s follow up shot cannoned back off the post.

With the rain still hammering down, the visitors had more of the territorial play in the second half, and leveled the score with a fine finish by PAUL COBB.

Dagenham & Redbridge twice hit the post within seconds, whilst other shots went narrowly wide, before Hornchurch introduced Mark Janney on the right wing.

With Andy Tomlinson dominant in midfield, Hornchurch netted the winner with a few minutes to goal when MARK JANNEY slotted the ball home from close range, with Tony Roberts diving the wrong way as the ball slowly rolled over the line.

Ronnie Hanley came on towards the end, and made the final telling run of the match, cutting in from the left wing, the final whistle going seconds later.

Mark Janney made 178 appearances for Hornchurch, scoring 41 goals.

He made 218 appearances for Dagenham & Redbridge.

His first senior club was Tottenham Hotspur, and then a loan spell at Brentford. He played for Dagenham & Redbridge from 1997 to 2004, then Braintree, Purfleetm and Heybridge Swifts, before joining Hornchurch in 2006.
