HORNCHURCH 1 FARNBOROUGH 1

Ben Bowditch, who signed from Sudbury during the week, made his debut in midfield.

Hornchurch dominated the match from the start and took an early lead when a Michael Spencer cross was handled in the area, and LEWIS SMITH took a long run up before calmly planting the ball firmly into o the net.

Hornchurch then allowed Farnborough to draw level, when DAVE TARPEY moved in from the right, and although his shot was saved by Joe Woolley, the ball squirmed out of his grasp and over the line, although the goal was only awarded by the referee after a conversation with the linesman who had not signaled that the ball had crossed the goal line.

Hornchurch relied heavily on Lewis Smith up front, and he had two shots blocked in quick succession, before keeper Craig Bradshaw denied Smith who had raced forward on to a through pass from Leon McKenzie.

Spencer then sent Smith clear and Bradshaw again saved well. Farnborough made a rare sortie into the home half and Reece Connelly was denied a shot at goal by a well timed tackle from Paul Goodacre, at the expense of a corner, which Woolley confidently pulled down as the ball was swerved across.

Close to half time a well worked move involving McKenzie, Tambeson Eyong and Lewis Smith resulted in a corner, which Spencer sent across only for Alan Inns to head away to safety.

Hornchurch could have regained the lead within a minute of the second half when a Lewis Smith shot was deflected off the line and into the path of Tambeson Eyong, who however hit his shot high over the bar from just six yards out.

And then Bradshaw tipped a goal bound `Smith shot onto the crossbar, and James Love, following up at speed, hit his shot inches wide of the far post.

A Smith free kick rebounded off the wall for a corner, and as Hornchurch piled on the pressure the visitors scrambled another corner out to safety.

Martin Tuohy replaced McKenzie, Joey May came on for Bowditch, as Hornchurch continued to press forward.

A Smith shot was blocked and the ball rebounded out to Frankie Curley whose shot saw Bradshaw make another excellent save, tipping the ball around for a corner. Spencer floated the ball over and it was again keeper Bradshaw to the rescue, this time denying Tuohy from just three yards out.

Farnborough won two corners, but did not really trouble Woolley in goal, and the closest they came was when Alan Inns headed over from a Nic Giardini corner.

A Lewis Smith shot went for another corner, and Simon Glover then replaced Tambeson Eyong, whose running had caused some considerable problems to the visiting defenders.

Farnborough held out for a point, in a match which Hornchurch could have won comfortably had they taken their chances.

Newly signed Ben Bowditch was with Tottenham Hotspur from 2001 to 2004, and then played for Colchester Utd in 2004-05, making six first team appearances. He played nine times for Academish Boldklub of Denmark in 2005, before joining Barnet, where he made eight first team appearances. After a loan spell with Yeading, he joined Cambridge City in 2007, and scored four goals in 36 appearances. He then played for St Alban’s City 2008 (11 / 0), Bishop’s Stortford 2009-2011, Thurrock 2011-12 (26 / 3), Concord Rangers 2012, and this season joined Sudbury.

You've heard the chant , "There's only two Michael Spencers".

Identical twins even down to their names.
