HORNCHURCH 2 HAVANT & WATERLOVILLE 2

Hornchurch were forced to make changes to the side which had won convincingly at Maidenhead. Reiss Noel was nursing an injury, whilst Michael Spencer had to withdraw following a family bereavement.

Lewis missed an early chance to give Hornchurch the lead when he scuffed his shot wide of the goal, whilst Joe Woolley had to move sharply out of goal a minute later to make a good save from Stefan Bailey.

Frankie Curley fired wide after a good defence splitting pass by Lewis Smith, and when a cross from Alex Bentley was headed away for a corner, Elliot Styles moved up to head Smith’s corner a fraction over the bar.

Lewis Smith opened up the Havant defence five times in succession, and each time his cross went begging across the goalmouth, but Hornchurch took a deserved lead following a good build up involving Alex Bentley and Ben Bowditch enabled MARTIN TUOHY to score with a powerful header.

Havant came back to force two corners, headed away by Paul Goodacre and Elliot Styles, but Hornchurch dominated the first half and almost went further ahead when Frankie Curley slotted through to Lewis Smith, who was thwarted at the last second by a well timed block by Perry Ryan.

A Tony Taggart corner was fielded by Joe Woolley whilst a Lewis Smith corner was punched away by Clark Masters, and on the stroke of half time a Taggart corner fell invitingly to Steve Ramsey whose hard shot was well saved by Woolley.

Within a minute of the second half Woolley gave a repeat performance, again saving from Ramsey.

Havant then took the lead thanks to two defensive errors in side four minutes, both of which enabled OLLIE PALMER to place the ball firmly in the net.

This was the signal for changes, and Wayne Gray replaced Ben Bowditch. With Hornchurch now playing three up front.

A Smith run and cross found Paul Goodacre, whose header was well saved by Masters, and a Smith corner reached Goodacre, who again went close.

Tambeson Eyong was causing panic in the visiting defence and when he was brought down in full flight, a somewhat lenient referee failed to produce a yellow card, and Lewis Smith hit the resulting free kick a fraction too high and over the bar.

Eyong, Gray and Smith then all combined to give Tuohy a shooting chance, and Masters saved, aided partly by the post, as the ball rolled tantalizing out for a corner.

Leon McKenzie came on for Simon Glover, and Hornchurch now had five players up front, with Eyong now joining in.

Havant were now defending in depth, Masters made an excellent save, when he tipped a goal bound shot from Curley around the post.

Hornchurch drew level after a long upfield kick by Joe Woolley caused total confusion in the Havant defence, and although LEON McKENZIE was sent crashing to the ground by the combined efforts of goalkeeper and defender, he managed to get enough power behind the ball and it rolled into the empty net. Had the ball not gone into the net, would it have been a penalty, and a red card?

Havant’s Ryan Woodford became the first player to receive a yellow card, whilst McKenzie was decidedly unfortunate to join him in the book shortly afterwards.

Hornchurch piled on the pressure and in the fourth minute of stoppage time a badly mistimed tackle by Sam Pearce led to another flurry of cards. ‘Twelve and six’ called out the referee. No, it was not his match fee, but two Havant players who were being summoned to the referee. Result – a yellow card for Pearce – many considered a straight red was more appropriate – and another yellow, immediately followed by a red, for Ryan Woodford. And in the ensuing discussions, Martin Tuohy was also shown a yellow card.

Didn't like the ref,he seemed to want to get involved too much with the crowd, yes the crowd gave him stick but that's normal, but backchatting isn't what referees do,they should concentrate on refereeing the game, which this buffoon was woefully inadequate at.

Personally I don't think there should of been more reds,if any at all but a number of Havant substitutions should of Been cautioned for slowly walking off the pitch,it's pointless doing it in some matches and not in others, makes them all look inconsistent

I thnk that refs have a difficult job and I don't envy them but it's inconsistency that is a main problem and it's why fans get annoyed. It means that players don't know where they stand from one game to the next and that the fans get frustrated when one ref lets something go in one game and another ref books someone for the same incident in another.

As for the game, it's a game that I think we could have won, but in the end when time was running out I was glad to get the draw.

Their No.9 caused us problems, but I think we had the majority of the play, particulary in the first half.

I think most are happy with the start we've made this season.

But we are the only club in top half of table with a minus goal difference.

If we can put this right who knows how far we can go in this league.

Shame about the attendances, I hope they improve.

The team deserve a lot better.
