HORNCHURCH 0 EASTBOURNE BOROUGH 1

In a match where the visitors rarely threatened as an attacking force, Hornchurch created, and squandered, several chances to take the three points. But three controversial decisions all went against Hornchurch, one of which led directly to the only goal of the match.

Neither side created any threat for long periods in the first half, although a Reiss Noel free kick was back headed by a defender to Frankie Curley, whose first time header was well saved by keeper Joseph Day.

At the other end Simon Glover headed away a corner in what was a rare Eastbourne sortie into the Hornchurch half.

And it was Glover who came close to opening the score with a hard drive from thirty yards which Day dived full length to tip over the bar. Lewis Smith took the corner and Paul Goodacre’s header went a fraction wide of the far post. Another Smith corner was over hit and drifted out harmlessly at the far side.

Lewis Smith then won a further corner from which the ball was only partially cleared as far as Alex Bentley, who promptly fired the ball back goalwards, where Day tipped the shot around the post for yet another corner.

Anwar Uddin came to the rescue when Glover had played Smith through, and his half clearance was quickly played back by James Love to Tambeson Eyong, whose shot cannoned back off a defender.

On the stroke of half time came the first incident which went against Hornchurch. Lewis Smith had made an inspired run at goal and the ball was saved in fine style by Day, at the expense of a corner. Smith took the corner and the ball was quickly played back to him, and his cross was met by a Martin Tuohy header, which many of the Hornchurch players, and most of the East Side, thought had crossed the line, until Day scooped the ball out and a corner was awarded, the referee ignoring the protests that it was a goal.

Paul Goodacre was taken to hospital at half time with a rib injury and Ben Bowditch came on, with Curley dropping back. And Hornchurch were still settling in to their new formation when Marvin Hamilton moved forward and Woolley turned his shot around the post for a corner, from which there was a massive scramble in front of goal, before the ball was eventually cleared.

Tambeson Eyong then sent out a good pass to James Love whose cross looked dangerous until the ball swerved inches over the bar.

Smith again created danger when he centred deep across goal, where Tuohy headed back to Ben Bowditch whose shot was blocked off the line.

The only goal of the game came following a highly controversial incident. Joe Woolley had run out of goal to kick clear, colliding with an Eastbourne forward in the process. The referee awarded a free kick and booked Woolley, who had seemingly done nothing wrong other then to clear the ball. CHRIS SHEPHARD waited for the wall to line itself up, and then neatly hammered the ball into the net.

Hornchurch continued to press forward but apart from a Bowditch shot which again was blocked they created few opportunities, until Wayne Gray, in full flight, was chopped down outside the area. Ollie Rowe escaped with a booking, and Lewis Smith took the free kick, and the ball was heading for goal until a defender handled it around the post – for a penalty? – no, for a corner, and the inevitable booking for Lewis Smith, who led the massed protests at what most considered a travesty.

Ben Bowditch then went close, when he hooked his shot inches wide of the far post.

Eastbourne won another corner which came to nothing, and Leon McKenzie and Michael Spencer replaced Love and Eyong.

It was Spencer who then created an excellent chance for Wayne Gray, whose powerful header hit the ground and then rose sharply over the bar.

Another free kick and this time it was Spencer who took the kick, firing the ball just wide of the post. In the four minutes added on for stoppages, two corners from Lewis Smith were scrambled clear, and Eastbourne held out to take the three points.
