Red Kites

Recommended Posts

Both birds are spreading very rapidly across the south east, especially buzzards which are now common everywhere except London but even then I have seen them over the city and west end on the odd occasion.

The red kites spread slower but are still working their way east through Hertfordshire and its only a matter of time until they hit Essex, and the other way they are now in Surrey where Sussex and Kent will in the next few years start seeing them more regularly.

We do have some wandering birds already in these parts

They seem to come and go over southern Dorking, but then I guess birds of that size probably have a very large hunting range.

Glad to see they have returned from where ever this year.

Youngest daughter has been watching two pairs, and today I have been watching one of last years youngsters patroilling over Southern Dorking on his own.

QUICK UPDATE.

Good news !!  I saw a seperate pair of juvenile red kites, possibly this years brood as they were smallish, circling near to Gatwick airport last Wednesday.  They really do seem to be doing very well.

Plenty of red kite activity around the Mole Valley area in the last few weeks causing comment in the local press.

Youngest daughter has got a couple of photo-shots of a pair circling over her garden.

My long range camera is ready to go on my living room table.
