HORNCHURCH 0 CHELMSFORD 2

This was one match which few Hornchurch supporters expected them to win – no Reiss Noel, no Paul Goodacre, both injured, and without Alex Bentley and Tambeson Eyong, both under a one match suspension, and Michael Spencer also unavailable. Andy Tomlinson, who was suffering from flu, was recalled from Heybridge Swifts, and Joey May from London Bari.

And it proved to be a somewhat predictable evening, with Chelmsford almost opening the score early on when Jamie Slabber ran through, his shot being well saved by Joe Woolley. Chelmsford however, despite enjoying the territorial advantage in the first half, did not offer too much of a threat, and the next opportunity came at the other end after Wayne Gray had slipped the ball through to Sam Cutler, who was promptly fouled. James Love took the free kick, with Lewis Smith lurking, and keeper Stuart Searle punched clear as Frankie Curley moved in.

The weakened Hornchurch side kept up the pressure, and Searle turned a Cutler corner over the bar for a second Cutler corner, which this time was comfortably cleared.

A high centre into the goalmouth by James Love was well held by Searle, but Hornchurch’s first – and only – shot on target came from Lewis Smith, whose long range attempt was easily held by Searle.

Chelmsford squandered a corner, Curley clearing, before Slabber looked certain to score with a penetrating run, until Simon Glover, playing out of position in defence, came back to make a timely tackle.

As Chelmsford began to force the pace, Rob Edmans won a corner, but the only goal of the first half came when Hornchurch were a player short, Wayne Gray receiving attention off the pitch for a twisted knee. The ball was lofted into the goalmouth and in the ensuing scramble it was cleared off the line, but only as far as ANTHONY COOK whose shot went through a crowd of players and into the net.

Wayne Gray took no further part in proceedings and was substituted at half time by Martin Tuohy.

Hornchurch cleared a corner shortly after the interval but fell further behind when a long throw into the goalmouth was only partially cleared and once again it was ANTHONY COOK who was waiting to provide the finishing touch.

Chelmsford had control of the midfield, but rarely threatened. Hornchurch for their part could not get the ball through to Leon McKenzie or Martin Tuohy. Andy Tomlinson came on for Cutler, and although this was his 250th appearance it went virtually unnoticed. Andy was quickly involved in the action, when he conceded a free kick just outside the area. The referee strode up, Lewis Smith appeared to intervene, and out came the yellow card, which was waved at Frankie Curley, to everyone’s surprise. And the free kick? It rebounded off the wall to safety.

Rimmel Daniel is a player who seems to like coming forward, though it took a quick interception from Tomlinson to prevent a possible break when Daniel’s pass went astray.

It was Daniel again to move along the left flank, and he then cut inside and was unceremoniously pulled down. Daniel took the free kick, floated the ball dangerously near to goal, and keeper Searle punched clear.

There was more consternation for Hornchurch when James Love was injured, and Elliot Styles came on for his 274th appearance.

Chelmsford came the closest to scoring in the remaining minutes when Craig Calver tried a twenty yard first time shot, which was well saved by Woolley.

Three points lost – but perhaps not unexpected, given the current injury crisis.

Presume it was 2-0 Tony and not as the header says?

Wasn't there myself.
