HORNCHURCH 3 BASINGSTOKE 0

Player news – Duran Reynolds was serving a one match suspension for five bookings, four of which were when he was with Billericay, Paul Goodacre returned to the squad following his back injury, Sam Cutler is now with Tilbury.

Hornchurch kicked towards the restaurant end of the ground in the first half, but struggled to find any rhythm. The best they could achieve was a shot from Wayne Gray which went wide of the far post from a Michael Spencer cross.

Basingstoke made much of the early running, winning three corners, before a shot from Jordace Holder-Spooner was well saved by Joe Woolley, who shortly afterwards made an even better save from the same player.

Hornchurch then went close when Andy Tomlinson fired his shot narrowly wide from a Frankie Curley pass.

Woolley made a good save from a Simon Dunn free kick, turning the ball around the post for a corner.

Hornchurch nearly took the lead when a Michael Spencer cross cannoned off a defender, and almost into the net.

But it was Basingstoke who forced the pace, and Woolley made another good save, this time from Shaun McAuley, and then fielded two corners in succession, as the home defence stood firm against some heavy pressure.

And it was Woolley once again, and once again from McAuley, before Tambeson Eyong, right on half time, had his shot blocked in what was Hornchurch’s first on-target shot of the match.

Kicking towards the windmill end in the second half, Hornchurch dominated throughout, and took the lead inside two minutes when Nathan Smart conceded a free kick on the left, and LEON McKENZIE touched Tomlinson’s well directed centre home.

And it was another Tomlinson free kick, which led to the second goal. Frankie Curley met the centre and his header was blocked on the line. The ball rebounded to LEON McKENZIE, whose first shot hit the post, and whose follow up shot hit the back of the net.

And it could have been three just a minute later, when Lewis Smith ran through, only for Ashley Bayes to save well.

With Hornchurch now in complete control, Joe Woolley, who had kept them in the match in the first half, was now largely a spectator, and Hornchurch went three up after a period of sustained pressure, when Bayes made another excellent save from Lewis Smith to turn the ball out for a corner. Tomlinson, who had created the first two goals, sent the ball over from the left and Curley’s header was cleared off the line, but only as far as Lewis Smith, who crashed his shot goalwards, the ball going in via WAYNE GRAY.

This proved to be Wayne’s last involvement in the match, as Rimmel Daniel came on in his place, shortly to be followed by Martin Tuohy, for McKenzie, and Joey May for Alex Bentley, who sustained a leg injury, shortly after tackling well to deny Matt Warner a scoring opportunity.

Hornchurch could have gone further ahead when Martin Tuohy ran through, but Ashley Bayes saved well.

Joey May made a series of telling passes, as the visiting defence caved in under pressure, but Hornchurch could not add to the score.
