With the news that Frankie Curley was unwell, Wayne Gray came into the starting line up, and Simon Glover came into the squad for Joey May. Welling obviously considered that the main danger was likely to come from Tambeson Eyong, who was chopped down six times in the first half, the first of which came after just two minutes. And from the free kick, taken by Andy Tomlinson, Eyong headed the ball back to Elliot Styles, whose shot was saved by Sam Mott. Welling had the better of the territorial play and Jack Obersteller sent a corner across the face of the goal, before the home side took the lead after Duran Reynolds had conceded a needless free kick. Obersteller floated the ball into the goalmouth, the defence failed to clear and ANTHONY ACHEAMPONG was at the far post to glide the ball into the net. Hornchurch went close when Eyong was sent crashing down, and Paul Goodacre took the free kick, placing the ball deep into the Welling area, where Styles reacted quickly to fire the half clearance back into the goalmouth, for Wayne Gray, whose shot was deflected around the post for a corner. But Welling immediately cleared Tomlinson’s kick and the ball was played upfield for Joe Healy who had plenty of time to place it ahead of JAKE GALLAGHER who calmly carried on to slot his shot past Joe Woolley. Reiss Noel then cleared a Loui Fazakerley corner, before Leon McKenzie sent Lewis Smith off on one of his many solo runs. Smith cut inside from the left wing, rounded two defenders, and hit his shot narrowly wide of the post. Reynolds was then booked for a foul and Fraser Franks took the free kick, sending the ball over the bar, but hitting a spectator in a Mr. Blobby costume on the head, bringing the loudest cheer of the day. Tomlinson was then booked for his first tackle of the match, despite Eyong having been brought down by five different players by this time, none of which had been penalized. A Fazakerley corner was punched away by Woolley, but Reynolds failed to clear and another corner was conceded. Fazakerley again took the kick and this time an unmarked ANTHONY ACHEAMPONG nodded home at the far post. Scott Kinch was booked for a foul almost on half time, and for once it was not Eyong who was on the receiving end. James Love came on for Tomlinson for the second half, and when Eyong was chopped down for the sixth time, out came the yellow card at last, Lee Clarke being the offender. The free kick was ideally placed just thirty yards out, but Lewis Smith fired the ball high and over the bar. Hornchurch were struggling to cope with the two full backs, Fazakerley and Obersteller, whose wing runs invariably created danger. After surviving a Fazakerley corner, which was headed away by Noel, and an Obersteller free kick, which went closer to Mr. Blobby than it did to the goal, Martin Tuohy came on for McKenzie, though most of the forward running still came from Smith and Eyong, the latter now being loudly booed whenever he touched the ball. The fourth goal came when LEE CLARKE headed home a cross from the left, and although Hornchurch continued to come forward, they rarely troubled the home defence. The best they could achieve was a shot from Ronnie Fletcher, which was comfortably fielded by Sam Mott, and Welling deservedly took the three points.
