HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE 5 HORNCHURCH 2

Heavy rain just a couple of miles from the ground did not reach Havant, but the pitch was still very wet and spongy, with a lot of water just below the surface.

Duran Reynolds has been recalled by Dagenham & Redbridge, and Paul Goodacre is out with a foot injury. This necessitated a defensive reshuffle with James Love coming in at right back and Alex Bentley switching to the left back position. Wayne Gray came into the starting line up.

But any hopes that the defence would combine were dashed inside the first five minutes when Reiss Noel needed a long spell of treatment before continuing for a time, and then eventually being forced to leave the field, with Ronnie Fletcher taking his place at centre half.

Reiss Noel had not been booked this season until eight minutes from the end at Welling, and he was again booked, just four minutes into the Havant match, thereby incurring two bookings in twelve minutes playing time.

Prior to Reiss’ injury, neither side had really made an impression, the only real move coming when Frankie Curley combined with Tambeson Eyong and Lewis Smith to send Alex Bentley away on the left. The resulting cross was well held by Clark Masters.

When Eyong was fouled out on the left, Andy Tomlinson took the free kick and the ball sailed invitingly across goal, with everyone – forwards and defence – looking on in admiration.

But with Noel struggling, the home side began to press strongly. Dan Strugnell fired over, but a minute later Havant went ahead with a gift goal. Chris Arthur sent a free kick into the area, and DAN STRUGNELL rose high to get in a soft header which should have caused no difficulty, only for Joe Woolley to make no attempt to save or touch the ball over, presumably thinking it was going over the bar. Instead it dropped behind Woolley and into the net.

A corner was comfortably cleared by Noel, and Christian Nanetti then sent in a speculative long range shot which went wide.

Hornchurch rarely threatened in this period, and fell further behind to another farcical goal. It all began when the referee twice insisted on a re-take of a throw in, and when James Love did eventually manage to take the throw, just inside the home half, the ball was promptly booted upfield, where the unmarked SEHR KABBA gratefully ran forward, took the ball around Woolley and then appeared to have wasted the chance as he put it straight at Elliot Styles on the goal line. Elliot elected to play the ball rather than to hammer it to safety, and somehow the ball managed to bobble under Styles’ feet and into the net.

Lewis Smith opened up the defence with a neat inside pass to Curley, whose shot was tipped over the bar by Masters, and Tomlinson’s corner came to nothing.

Noel again needed treatment and this time he had to be replaced, Ronnie Fletcher moving into the centre of the defence.

Neither side could make any impression, until one minute into stoppage time, with Hornchurch pressing forward in an effort to pull a goal back, when a long clearance out of defence found OLLIE PALMER, looking to be in an offside position, and with no defender anywhere near him. He carried on, rounded Woolley and calmly slotted the ball home from a difficult angle.

Hornchurch quickly ran the ball down field in the remaining seconds of the first half and Eddie Hutchinson brought down Lewis Smith on the edge of the area, escaping with a yellow card. Tomlinson took the free kick, sending the ball over the bar.

A minute into the second half and it could have been four. The defence was again opened up, Kabba ran the ball around Woolley, and then squared it back across goal, where Palmer, in front of goal, could not get his shot on target.

Hornchurch now came a lot more into the match as an attacking force, starting with a Tomlinson free kick, which opened up the home defence. Styles had the first attempt, the ball being blocked on the line, and the follow up, but Leon McKenzie, met with the same fate.

With Hornchurch committed to coming forward, a Tomlinson corner was played short to Lewis Smith, who weaved in from the left and his shot was turned around the post for another corner.

Martin Tuohy then came on for McKenzie, and shortly afterwards Joey May replaced Tomlinson, and Hornchurch, with Smith prominent and Tuohy equally dangerous, began to find gaps in the home defence.

Joey May made a quick impact when he sent Smith away, who in turn switched play to the right, where Wayne Gray crossed, and Bentley’s header was saved by Masters.

And it was Gray a minute later, with a shot, which Masters did well to tip over the bar for a corner.

A similar move gave Lewis Smith an opening, and his shot was tipped over by Masters for a further corner.

With Havant now defending in depth, Hornchurch pulled a goal back when LEWIS SMITH capped a fine solo run with a shot from the right which went in, despite the attempts of a defender to keep the ball out.

Havant came back quickly with a good run and shot by Christian Nanetti, which Woolley saved well, to turn the ball out for a corner. But the corner was played towards the near post, OLLIE PALMER flicked it on, and the ball bobbled almost apologetically past Woolley and into the net.

Hornchurch stormed back up field, the ball was played out to Martin Tuohy on the left wing, and, from his centre, WAYNE GRAY headed powerfully home.

The final goal was the result of a needlessly conceded free kick by Alex Bentley. The ball was played low into the goalmouth, Woolley saved the first attempt, and OLLIE PALMER followed up to prod the ball home.

In the final move of the match Ronnie Fletcher was booked for a mistimed tackle on Scott Jones, and Woolley tipped the free kick over the bar.
