HORNCHURCH 2 SALISBURY CITY 2

Lewis Smith and Tambeson Eyong were both unavailable due to suspension, whilst Elliot Styles could be missing for the remainder of the season after breaking his collar bone against Colchester. Michael Spencer made a welcome return to the line up, along with Paul Goodacre.

Defences were dominant in the first half and scoring chances were rare and usually confined to shots from outside the area.

Hornchurch had the first opportunity when Joey May sent a defence splitting pass to Frankie Curley, whose shot was deflected for a corner. Joey May swung the ball over and Paul Goodacre directed his header too high and over the bar.

Salisbury quickly began to take control of the midfield and when they were awarded a free kick out on the right, the ball was sent deep into the middle for Elliott Frear, and Joe Woolley tipped his accurate shot over the bar. Frear’s corner was comfortably headed away by Goodacre.

Salisbury continued to press, and Ronnie Fletcher did well to concede a corner when Theo Lewis sent a good pass though to White. Frear sent the ball over, and Curley played it off to concede a corner on the other side of the pitch. Frear again and this time it was Reiss Noel who cleared.

At the other end a Joey May corner was flighted too low and James Clarke cleared.

Salisbury took the lead thanks to some poor defending, which led to another corner. Once again it was Frear who swerved the ball over, to the near post, where Frankie Curley headed the ball high into the air, and over Joe Woolley, and, despite the efforts of Michael Spencer to keep it out, the ball looped into the net, the goal being greeted with an eerie silence.

Hornchurch had a chance to pull the goal back inside a minute, when Martin Tuohy received the ball out on the left wing, but his first time attempt from long range was too high.

Salisbury lost some of their dominance towards the closing stages, managing just one further attack, which led to the almost inevitable corner.

In stoppage time Hornchurch could have drawn level when Ronnie Fletcher’s free kick fell invitingly for Wayne Gray, who hit his shot high over the bar.

The second half began slowly, although Hornchurch now had more of the territorial play, despite the visitors looking dangerous whenever they came forward.

Leon McKenzie came on for Fletcher, the formation then shifting to three up front, and with Spencer moving into the right back position.

Hornchurch wasted a chance to equalize when Alex Bentley sent the non-stop Andy Tomlinson away on the left, and Andy sent the ball across the goal, where Wayne Gray just failed to get the final touch.

Hornchurch now seemed to have controlled Salisbury’s fast moving forwards, although the East Side expressed considerable annoyance at what they considered to be two blatant dives by visiting forwards.

As Hornchurch began to force the pressure, a Martin Tuohy goal bound shot was blocked, and the nearby river Ingrebourne welcomed two more balls that were booted high out the ground.

On 78 minutes there was a massive handball appeal, which both linesman and referee agreed with. Several of the Salisbury team did not agree, and Brian Dutton was booked for his protests. It was some time before the penalty could be taken, but MARTIN TUOHY stood there calmly waiting, and equally calmly slotted the ball home.

In the last two matches a goal has been scored within a minute of the match being restarted, and it happened yet again, though not before Leon McKenzie had seen his shot well saved by Will Puddy, and the clearance up field led to the next goal.

If the first Salisbury goal was down to defensive error, this one was down to defensive shambles. Joe Woolley spilled an apparently simple catch, dropping the ball as it came over from the left, and then twice failed to pick up the loose ball, before a somewhat surprised JAMIE WHITE stabbed it into the net.

Salisbury won two further corners before being forced to defend in depth, and despite the pressure, they seemed capable of playing out the final minutes until Tuohy was brought down as he went for goal, the culprit possibly Theo Lewis. Again the visitors protested at length, though only one yellow card was handed out. And again MARTIN TUOHY waited calmly for the protestations of innocence to be rejected by the referee, and equally as calmly he slotted the ball home.

The next move came as a surprise, as Tuohy was withdrawn and replaced by James Love. In the event it made little difference as the referee only added two minutes. Although it took almost four minutes to play those two minutes, neither side could create a match winning opportunity.

One point gained – but two points thrown away by defensive mistakes.
