HORNCHURCH 1 TONBRIDGE 1

It was largely thanks to the Supporters Association that this match was able to go ahead. They had descended en masse on Tuesday and Thursday to remove the snow from the pitch, and again this morning to clear away the icy patches which remained. The result was plenty of snow piled up around the pitch, but a perfectly clear, albeit very heavy, playing surface.

Hornchurch lost the toss and kicked towards the clubhouse end in the first half, and although a Joey May shot was saved by Lee Worgan in the first five minutes, this proved to be a rare scoring chance in the first half, with the visitors having the better of the play.

Full back Sonny Miles frequently found himself with far too much space, and on three occasions he sent over dangerous crosses into the goalmouth. One of these fell invitingly in front of George Purcell, and his first time shot was well saved by Joe Woolley.

At the other end a cross from James Love found Andy Tomlinson, but his shot was too hurried and went wide of the post.

Tonbridge almost took advantage of a seemingly innocuous throw in, when Alex Bentley threw the ball back to Woolley, who took too much time in clearing. The ball bounced back from Purcell, who then played it into the goalmouth, where Reiss Noel was able to get back to clear.

David Ijaha headed wide of the goal from a good centre from Miles, and Tonbridge went close again when a long clearance found Purcell. With the home defence waiting in vain for an offside flag, Purcell homed in on the ball, and Woolley made an instinctive save, diverting the flick around the post. Lee Browning floated the corner over, and Michael Spencer played the ball to safety.

Hornchurch created their best chance of the half when May sent Martin Tuohy away, and Tuohy turned the ball in front of Frankie Curley, whose shot, from the edge of the area, cannoned back off a defender.

Keeper Worgan had to rush a long way out of goal to clear from Tuohy, ending up close to the Hornchurch dug out, where he conceded a throw in and then was booked for time wasting as he was even more reluctant to release the ball than a Swansea City ball boy.

Worgan was again in action just before the interval when he held on to an Andy Tomlinson corner.

Tonbridge made the first sortie of the second half, when Purcell fired wide from a Frannie Collin free kick.

Martin Tuohy almost found the net with an overhead kick which Worgan saved with his feet.

Worgan did well to turn a May cross out for a corner after a good defence splitting pass from Love. May swung the corner over and Worgan tipped it over the bar for a second corner, again taken by May, and this time punched clear by the keeper.

A Nathan green corner was headed away by Paul Goodacre, before Tonbridge went in front thanks to some poor defending. It started when Noel Reiss headed weakly away, and this in turn forced Love into conceding a corner. Browning sent the ball deep towards the far post, where it bobbled around and FRANNIE COLLIN applied the final touch.

Hornchurch almost leveled when a long range shot from James Love, seemingly going a long way out of play, suddenly dipped and landed on the cross bar.

Leon McKenzie came on for Joey May, Lewis Smith dropped back, and McKenzie went up front with Tuohy.

The equalizing goal came from a move started by Spencer, who played the ball out to the left wing, for Tuohy to cross low into the middle, where LEWIS SMITH was waiting to slot home.

Hornchurch were now piling on considerable pressure, and when Tomlinson took a free kick close to the half way line, he played the ball short to Smith, whose run ended in a corner. Tomlinson sent the ball over to the far post, and it fell to Curley, whose shot was kicked off the line by a somewhat fortunate Worgan.

Worgan again saved with his feet when Love sent Tuohy clear.

Wayne Gray replaced Tuohy, but although Hornchurch pressed forward strongly, they were unable to penetrate the packed Tonbridge defence.
