HORNCHURCH 1 SUTTON UTD 1

Sutton Utd have stand-in goalkeeper Wayne Shaw to thank for their point. Shaw made several good, if at times unorthodox, saves to keep his side in with a chance, and when they took the lead in a few minutes to go, it seemed as if they would take all three points.

Hornchurch started confidently against a Sutton team who packed their defence. Keeper Shaw made his first save in the second minute when he kicked away a Martin Tuohy through ball. The ball rolled out to Lewis Smith, and his lobbed shot went over the bar.

Shaw punched away from a Tambeson Eyong centre, which was followed by the best move of the first half. Tuohy made ground before crossing to Eyong, who played the ball quickly back to Frankie Curley, and Jamie Stuart charged his first time shot down.

Sutton rarely threatened, though when Marvin Williams found himself unmarked on the edge of the area, his chipped shot dropped onto the roof the net.

Smith went close with a solo run, followed by a shot which was charged down, and when Smith sent Tuohy clear, it took a well timed interception by Stuart to prevent a goal, at the cost of a corner. Andy Tomlinson sent the ball over and Shaw punched away.

Shaw was in action again when he dived to keep out a shot from Lewis Smith, and at the other end it was Joe Woolley to the rescue when James Folkes found himself in a shooting position.

Five minutes into the second half, and Hornchurch should have been home and dry, as they attacked into the rain. Lewis Smith made a fine solo run, but his shot was diverted around the post by Shaw, and a minute later Shaw made an excellent save from Martin Tuohy to keep his side in with a chance.

Two more corners were punched away by Shaw, and Woolley reciprocated at the other end with a Sutton corner.

Woolley made another excellent save when he tipped a Dundas header onto the bar, following a Sutton corner.

A goal seemed likely when Tambeson Eyong raced in from the right and homed in on goal, but he was scythed down on the edge of the area. The referee took no action, other than to award a free kick, and Lewis Smith hit the free kick hard into the wall of defenders, with Andy Tomlinson’s follow up meeting the same fate.

Wayne Gray came on for Lewis Smith, and immediate Hornchurch looked more dangerous. Billy Coyne came on for Tambeson Eyong, taking up a midfield position.

Hornchurch thought they had taken the lead when Gray headed on for Martin Tuohy, who ran on and neatly slipped the ball past Shaw and into the net – but a linesman decreed otherwise, and the goal was disallowed for a highly controversial offside decision.

Leon McKenzie replaced Martin Tuohy, and James Love was booked for what most considered to be a perfect tackle.

It was a Wayne Gray header which led to the opening goal for Sutton, when the ball was quickly played back up field, and CRAIG DUNDAS weaved his way through to score.

With two minutes left in normal time, Hornchurch drew level. Billy Coyne hurled a long throw into the goalmouth, and WAYNE GRAY turned sharply to fire the ball home.

In stoppage time Sutton were awarded a free kick following a Michael Spencer tackle, and Sam Rents hit the ball hard against the bar.
