HORNCHURCH 0 MAIDENHEAD UTD 1

Hornchurch were without Reiss Noel, missing due to a back injury, and with Elliot Styles also out, recovering from a broken collar bone, Tambeson Eyong found himself in the unaccustomed position of playing as a second centre half.

And it was Eyong, whose performance was excellent throughout, who inadvertently led to the first goal, when the referee decided that his well timed tackle was in fact illegal. The net result was a free kick, just outside the penalty area, and in front of goal. Hornchurch have on several occasions this season failed to defend free kicks, and this was no exception. Michael Pook lurked, but it was ALEX WALL who stepped up to fire the ball through the motionless wall and past Joe Woolley.

Prior to the goal, Hornchurch had missed two good chances to score. When Lewis Smith was chopped down – is there any other way they could stop him? – Andy Tomlinson floated the free kick towards the far post, where Eyong powered in a good header which was well saved by Billy Lumley.

And just a minute before Maidenhead opened the scoring, a move involving Frankie Curley and Lewis Smith opened up the defence for Martin Tuohy, his shot was parried by Lumley and the ball rebounded to Michael Spencer who inexplicably missed the open goal in front of him.

Maidenhead had created an opening when Pook’s free kick was headed goalwards and Woolley punched clear.

Wall had earlier escaped a booking with what many considered to be a dive, but he should have increased the lead when he weaved a way through, only for Woolley to react quickly to save.

Paul Goodacre made an excellent tackle to deny Harry Pritchard, but both sides were becoming increasingly agitated with a series of decisions, and at times non-decisions. When Tuohy was left prone on the ground, the referee allowed play to continue until the ball went out of play. Not something which you could argue about, but a few minutes later, when a visiting player went down, the whistle went immediately. Inconsistency such as this is unacceptable.

Alex Wall was then booked for what the referee indicated was persistent fouling by the visitors.

Shortly before the interval, Hornchurch could have scored twice inside a minute. James Love opened the defence with a good pass to Lewis Smith whose lengthy run ended with a fine shot which was turned around the post by Lumley.

Shortly afterwards Smith again set off on a cross field run, and played the ball inside to Wayne Gray, whose hard shot beat the defence and cannoned back off the angle of post and bar.

In stoppage time – just three minutes were added, despite lengthy stoppages – Woolley saved well from Pritchard, who had found himself with a clear run at goal, and with the last kick of the half Lumley saved fro Lewis Smith.

The second half was just seconds old when Hornchurch were denied a penalty when Spencer was brought down inside the area.

And when Maidenhead won a corner soon afterwards, Andy Tomlinson was belatedly booked for what a tackle that had occurred some considerable time earlier. The corner was cleared comfortably but the ball was played back into the area. The ball was going harmlessly out of play several yards to the left of the goal, when it hit Martin Tuohy on the arm and a penalty was awarded. BONNY BEHZASI converted the penalty, and an infuriated Tuohy was booked for understandably arguing about the decision, at best controversial, at worst ridiculous.

And to add insult to injury, Hornchurch were denied a penalty five minutes later when the ball was handled inside the area.

Time for changes – Leon McKenzie for Gray, Billy Coyne for Love.

And at last – a penalty for Hornchurch, a blatant push almost on the goalline. Martin Tuohy took the kick and Lumley easily saved the poorly directed shot.

Joey May on for Andy Tomlinson, but by now Maidenhead were content to hold on to their lead.

Wall escaped a second yellow card when he appeared to make another blatant dive – the referee, whose decisions grew weirder as the match progressed, allowed play to continue and completely failed to take any action when the ball eventually went out of play.

Hornchurch had the better of the territorial play, but all too often it was left for Lewis Smith to try and find a way through the packed visiting defence.

Maidenhead could have gone further ahead when Pritchard found himself with a shooting chance, but Woolley saved well.

Three points lost, and Maidenhead deservedly won, with or without the refereeing decisions.
