Francis Kumbur

From doing a little bit of research this is what I have managed to discover.

A 6ft 2 Nigerian international striker (capped 7 times, 1 goal) previously with Yeovil ( 6 goals in 8 in the Conference)but was released 06/02 and Aldersh*t (on trial I think) also Ossett Town. Also played in the League of Wales and in Ireland and in Singapore.

Got a MOTM for Yeovil away at Southport.

Had a trial at Farnborough and played v QPR, and had a trial at Drogheda.

Scored 14 times in 6 games for Haywards Heath.

Married to a British national so no work permit issues there. <img src="/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

A few selected opinions from Yeovil:

"The 23-year-old has been capped 7 times by his country and could be considered for this summer's World Cup Finals in Japan and Korea - he had been invited to join Nigeria's squad for the midweek game v Paraguay played at Loftus Road on Tuesday night, but declined the invitation, preferring to stay training with Yeovil in a bid to secure a contract with the club. He is married to a British national and therefore does not require a work permit.

Speaking about Kumbur to the Western Gazette, manager Gary Johnson said: "He is on the fringes of the Nigeria squad.... He has played for them before and at under-21 level. He is obviously in their thoughts. They asked him to play in the Paraguay game but I think he felt he only had a few days with us and if he wanted to take his chance with me in England he needed to be with us for the whole 3 or 4 days, otherwise how could I make a decision on him? To be fair to him he did that and I like his attitude. His mentality to the game is brilliant and I have also been impressed with his work-rate in training. It's not a long-term thing because it's a bit late in the day to make long-term decisions on people. It is until the end of the season - he is looking at us and we are looking at him." "Last at Ossett Town as far as I can tell. Spent some time at Barry Town early in the season. Had a summer trial at Aldershot."

"Played only a handful of games at the end of 2001-2 season on a month long contract - looked fairly promising, scored a couple of goals but I seem to recall that he had a tendency to be rather over-exuberant in his tackling and pick up unnecessary yellow cards."

"Yep, I don't mean to sound patronising, but I think he'll be fine for yourselves, much in the same way that Chris Giles was for you.

Francis Kumbur is a lanky quick striker, who is a little bit all arms and legs but obviously scares a lot of defences. He was JUST off our level (the season we won the FA trophy) and so only really made fringe appearances for us. A more mid-table Conference side would probably make better use of him and give him regular starts." -

All from their forum.

Bit of a mixed bag of opinion, sounds promising though.
