West Ham United To Move To The Olympic Stadium

So it's goodbye to the Boleyn Ground, and maybe the death knell for Leyton Orient FC (unless they can move in to the Olympic Hockey Stadium).

I agree with Richard Caborn - the money for this should not come from the public sector.

IMO its outrageous that taxpayers are subsidising any professional football club, the fact that WHU are only making a token gesture of £15million towards the cost of the conversion and paying a derisory £2million pounds a year rent (which is about the revenue received for one match) almost beggars belief.

The situation with Orient is that Barry Hearne has indicated he will have to relocate his club, and Romford, where he has long standing links, is a possible site. If that happens and WHU keep their promise to have a cheap ticketing policy it difficult to see how Romford, AFC Hornchurch and even Dagenham & Redbridge can remain sustainable. I personally would be quite happy watching Romford Orient (or whatever they choose to call themselves) playing in a sparkling new stadium in my home town.

There's one place that Mr. Hearn could look to relocate Leyton Orient to - The Olympic Hockey Stadium.

Ah...problem then. I thought that was one of the venues that was staying put.

I guess building a stadium on part of Hackney Marshes would also be a no-no.....

The marshes are to close to the Olympic Stadium which is what Barry Hearne is so up in arms about. If I was in his position I would be looking at Harlow, or possibly Basildon and see if a ground share arrangement could be negotiated with Southend United. Both location would upset their loyal following though. Barkingside which is a short journey on the central line could be feasible and be close enough to satisfy a large proportion of fans, and failing that WHU own a small stadium with a large amount of land in Rush Green, Romford. Dagenham & Redbridge would almost certainly object to that unless they was offered a ground share as their current stadium is one of the worse in the football league.

Trouble then is, Leyton Orient would cease to have meaning - as it would not be in Leyton.

What about the old Leyton FC ground - how much would that cost to make up to League standard?

  • 1 year later...

I see that Andy Carroll firmly believes that West Ham’s Olympic Stadium move in 2016 can bring Champions League football to East London, for some strange reason Carroll thinks that he Club will automatically qualify for the Champions League just because they are moving to Usain Bolt’s, Mo Farrah’s and Jessica Ennis’s stomping ground.
