BOREHAM WOOD 2 HORNCHURCH 1

They didn’t deserve to lose – but they did.

The M25 was at its worst, and we wondered if we would get there in time for the start. The traffic news on the radio warned of long delays, though we were already aware, as we in stuck in them.

There were still banks of snow round about, and, at a bleak, unwelcoming, desolate and near deserted Boreham Wood, Hornchurch made the first attacking move of the match, when a Martin Tuohy shot was deflected for a Joey May corner. The home defence, that won practically everything in the air during the first half, cleared the ball comfortably.

May was then the creator of the opening, which gave Lewis Smith a run at goal, albeit via a cross field run which preceded the shot, which was turned away by James Russell for a corner. May this time sent the ball out to the edge of the area, where Michael Spencer’s shot was diverted over the bar for another corner.

Spencer and Smith then combined to give Tuohy a shooting chance, the ball again being diverted out for a corner.

But this promising start was not kept up, as the home defence began to control much of the midfield.

Boreham Wood took the lead after the ball had been worked across to the left side of the pitch, where GRAEME MONTGOMERY put in a shot, and the ball went into the net via the far post.

It could have been two shortly afterwards when Alex Bentley was caught in possession and this allowed Michael Thalassitis a clear run at goal. Joe Woolley quickly narrowed the angle and made an excellent save, punching the ball out to Chris Bourne to complete the clearance.

When Elliot Styles was penalized the free kick that resulted was deflected out for a corner, and as half time approached Hornchurch were forced to defend in depth.

Woolley made another good save, diving to stop a shot from Charlie Moore, who had reacted quickest when Montgomery’s corner dropped into a packed goalmouth.

And it was Woolley again, in stoppage time, saving twice in quick succession, both times from a corner out on the left.

Hornchurch kept up their aerial bombardment in the second half, and quickly won two corners, both taken by Joey May, and both punched away by James Russell.

Joe Woolley returned the compliment at the other end of the pitch, and little else happened of note until Boreham Wood introduced Loick Pires and Greg Morgan, whilst Tambeson Eyong came on for Michael Spencer.

And it was Eyong who ran at the defence to produce the first signs of nervousness in their up-until-then solid back line. Eyong started the move which led to the equalizing goal, when he opened up the play, before the ball was switched out to Lewis Smith on the left wing. Smith crossed from the touchline and KIERON ST AIMIE was at the near post to turn the ball into the net.

Eyong almost created a second goal with a neat through pass into the patch of Martin Tuohy, but Russell quickly rushed out to grab the ball at the edge of the area.

Hornchurch continued to press and Rickie Hayles sent a long throw into the middle where St Aimie turned sharply to fire in a shot, which Russell tipped around the post.

Wayne Gray came on for Martin Tuohy but it was now the turn of the two Boreham Wood substitutes to impress. Greg Morgan sent over a swerving corner, and received the ball back. His return shot was well saved by Woolley who dived full length to punch clear.

But a minute later a high cross from the right was converted by LOICK PIRES, who found himself unmarked at the far post.

Hornchurch continued to come forward, and the only reply from the home side was another solo run which again ended in a corner, when Elliot Styles tackled to block the cross from the left.

Boreham Wood introduced their third substitute, Mario Noto, who however only remained on the field for a few minutes, before his extremely rash tackle on Rickie Hayles left the Hornchurch player prone on the floor, and the referee immediately produced the red card. Not a single Boreham Wood player contested the decision.

St Aimie almost found the net with a shot from thirty yards out, which dipped alarmingly, before Russell dived to tip the ball over the bar. Joey May sent the corner over, and the ball was twice blocked on the line before the referee decided – as referees often do decide in such a situation – that it was better to award a free kick to the defending side, with the ball right on the goal line.

The referee added on four minutes for stoppages, which actually took well over seven minutes to complete, thanks to some blatant time wasting tactics.
