SUTTON UTD 3 HORNCHURCH 1

Hornchurch, lacking the suspended Joey May, almost fell behind in the first minute, when Craig Dundas was left unmarked on the edge of the area, only to fire his shot high over the bar.

Not to be outdone, Sutton Utd also almost fell behind in the first minute as the goal kick was played up the field, Hornchurch won a free kick, which was taken quickly and Lewis Smith found himself in a shooting position, only to hit the ball weakly, giving Tom Lovelock a comfortable save.

This should have been the signal for both sides to settle down, but with just two minutes gone, a completely misplaced back pass gifted the ball to Dundas, who calmly rounded Joe Woolley, and, with players closing in at speed, he then hit the ball over an open goal.

It did settle down after that, and the next move came from Hornchurch, Chris Bourne combining with Smith to give Martin Tuohy an opening, but he slipped and keeper Lovelock dropped on the ball before Tuohy could get his shot away.

Woolley did well to save a powerful header from a Sam Rents corner, and Sutton Utd missed a good chance to open the score when Marvin Williams turned sharply only to put his shot high over the bar.

Tambeson Eyong had a good chance to score when he raced away towards goal, only to be tripped by Anthony Riviere, who escaped with a yellow card. The free kick, taken by Smith, went wide of the post.

Hornchurch enjoyed their best spell of pressure when Tuohy combined with Smith to win a corner. Chris Bourne floated the ball across and Smith’s shot was deflected out for another corner which Jamie Stuart headed away.

Hornchurch seemed to be coping with the inventive home attack, but they fell behind following a move which began with a good through pass by Riviere, and the ball was worked back towards the edge of the area, where a harmless shot – or so it seemed – was fumbled by Woolley, allowing HARRY BEAUTYMAN a simple tap-in to open the score.

Bourne and Alex Bentley then between them shut out a promising move from James Folkes, whilst Hornchurch could have leveled close to half time when Smith’s free kick reached Tuohy, who fired his shot over the bar.

Hornchurch could have scored early in the second half when Smith opened up the home defence before crossing the ball low into the goalmouth, where a shot was blocked and the ball fell invitingly in front of Eyong, whose first time shot hit a defender almost on the line and the ball was scrambled away.

Sutton slowly began to get on top, with a series of attacks had at times Hornchurch defending in depth. From one such move a Beautyman cross was cleared off the line, and although Marvin Williams followed up quickly, Frankie Curley was back to deflect the ball away for a corner.

Elliot Styles gave Eyong an opening, and although Tambeson ran past two defenders, he put his shot wide of the goal.

Hornchurch put Sutton under some defensive pressure with a series of long throws from Billy Coyne, but none of them found a Hornchurch player in the middle, and Kieron St Aimie and Michael Spencer replaced Coyne and Eyong.

And it was Spencer who had a good chance after an equally good build up when Smith sent Bourne away on the left, but although the cross fell ideally for Tuohy, he could not get any direction with his shot.

Sutton were at times putting the Hornchurch defence under pressure and when Rents sent the ball over from the left, Woolley did well to save from Ali Fuseini whose shot from just a short distance out cannoned back and was then cleared.

Wayne Gray, with his thigh heavily bandaged, came on for Tuohy, and although nursing the injury, his presence gave Sutton more than a few concerns. But the home defence were caught by surprise when Rickie Hayles sent a long throw deep into the goalmouth – they had assumed that the aerial bombardment was over when Billy Coyne was replaced – and keeper Lovelock punched away. Hayles followed up with another long throw, and the ball fell towards the far post where WAYNE GRAY scored with a spectacular shot.

A Smith inspired move almost paid dividends when Bourne was sent away on the left but his cross was turned over the bar for a corner.

It was then the turn of Joe Woolley to excel, when he made two incredible saves in the space of a few seconds, and then for an encore he saved first from Rhys Murrell-Williamson and then from Dundas, again both within a few seconds, as the Hornchurch goal came under more heavy pressure.

MARVIN WILLIAMS put Sutton back in front five minutes from time, and Hornchurch attacked from the restart, with almost everyone up in attack.

And this proved to be their downfall, as Spencer’s hard shot cannoned off a defender and back up field to an unmarked RHYS MURRELL-WILLAIAMSON, who raced towards goal, and fired the ball past Woolley.

Hornchurch almost pulled a goal back, when Hayles, up in attack found himself in a good position, but although he lobbed the ball over Lovelock, the keeper was able to turn and grab the ball before it crossed the line.
