Actually one of Wales best ever players, Trevor Ford played for Romford in the 60s, we also had ex Wales international Dave Hollins play for us, and he was probably the worse GK ever to play for Romford. My Grandfather had the pleasure of meeting him when he played out his career at Somerton Park (Newport County's former ground). Interesting fact about him - he was a substitute fielder during the infamous cricket match at St. Helen's (Swansea) where Sir Garfield Sobers hit six sixes. Trevor Fords speciality was to shoulder charge goalkeeper into the back of the net, preferably with the ball still in his hands. Keepers didnt get the protection they get now and I doubt players like Ford could play at such a high level now. We had quite a few ex international players in those days, partly because footballers never made much money and needed to keep on playing, and also because they didnt have the benefits of sports science or nutritionists and many of them was washed up far to early because of bad diet or to much boozing.
