Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Ilkeston FC are celebrating the success of another academy graduate after Rai Simons scored on his full international debut for Bermuda.

The forward was on target in a 2-2 friendly draw against Grenada on Wednesday night and set up his country's other goal.

The 19-year-old came off the bench in a 5-0 hammering of the Bahamas in the first leg of a World Cup first round qualifier earlier this month and should be involved again on Sunday when the Caribbean nations contest the second leg. Baring a miracle, Bermuda will face Guatemala in the second round.

Proud officials at the New Manor Ground are now looking forward to welcoming Simons home next week after the influential role he's played in 13 Premier Division matches since the departure of a number of other academy graduates led by Ashley Hunter, Kane Richards and most recently, Che Adams, to the professional game.

Robins chief executive Nigel Harrop said: “Everybody at the club is extremely happy for him to not only be involved in the squad but to be selected in the starting XI is remarkable.

“He has been with us here at Ilkeston for two years now, working his way through the academy set up here to earn his spot in the first team.

“It is exceptional that a player that has come through our academy has gone on to represent his country in a World Cup qualifier, it just shows what we are trying to do here at Ilkeston."

He added: “We are looking forward to welcoming him back to aid us in the last few matches of the season to cement a play-off place.”
