Corby boss pays tribute after remarkable turnaround

Twelve months can be a long time in football, however few transformations in the game can be as extreme as Corby Town during that period.

In March 2014 the Steelmen were teetering on the brink of administration and the potential extinction of the club. Payments to players and staff had been delayed, a fans fighting fund was set up and some key players had cancelled their contracts. Home attendances were falling for the first time in ten years, with fans becoming disillusioned and protesting against the chairman Kevin Ingram. The future, or lack of one, looked bleak.

On 25th March 2015 a group of local businessmen, led by Paul Glass, signed a deal to purchase the club and ultimately save it from administration. And ever since the club has gone from strength to strength both on and off the field, culminating in tomorrow’s title clash with Poole Town in Dorset, exactly one year on.

One man who has experienced all of the highs and lows during that time has been manager Tommy Wright, who arrived at the club during the turmoil of the 2013/14 campaign.

Wright told corbytownfc.co.uk; “The situation right now is so surreal, you would not have thought that this club was on its knees 12 months ago. The club nearly folded and now we have a chance to be crowned champions just 12 months later.

“Last season was a long frustrating one, we got ourselves in a great position in the league to mount a serious play-off charge and then the off field financial situation hit and the team we had put together was soon dismantled and we were just trying to field a side until the end.

“A huge amount of credit must go to Paul Glass, the other directors that took over last April and of course the chairman Stevie Noble. They came in and saved the club and we haven’t really looked back since.

“We had a blank canvas at the start of the season, signed the players that we wanted from scratch and the lads have been a credit to themselves getting us into this position ahead of tomorrow.

“I have backed the boys since day one and have a huge amount of belief in them. We have a special group of players with fantastic ability. I am confident that we can get the win that we need on Saturday.

“There is no question that ourselves and Poole have been the two best sides in the division this season and whoever wins the game on Saturday will be worthy winners and will have earned it.”
