Marginson pride at FC United promotion

FC United of Manchester manager Karl Marginson has spoken of his pride in and gratitude to the club after the Reds clinched our fourth promotion in ten years.

United won the Evo-Stik Premier Division title with one game to spare after beating Stourbridge 1-0 on Tuesday night and have sealed promotion to the soon to be rebranded Vanarama National League North.

Margy said: "I’m proud of everyone at the club; the players, the staff and the supporters. It was brilliant to see all the smiling faces on Tuesday night and even two grown men crying. It makes it extra special.

"We’ve had some tough times over the last few years, just missing out in the play-offs and last season the title by a point, so I’m really grateful to everyone for sticking by me and giving me the chance to deliver promotion and the championship."

Margy, who’s well known for being calm and collected on the touchline, admitted that his celebration for Greg Daniels’ title winning goal was slightly more exuberant than normal - he jumped into the arms of coach, Darren Lyons.

"It was a relief. It was looking like it was going to be another one of those games. We hit the bar twice and Shelton (Payne) had that shot cleared off the line but we found a way through. That’s testament to the players, they’ve got a never say die attitude and they always believe that they can score."

Matthew Wolfenden is the only injury concern ahead of the trip to second placed Workington on Saturday after being kneed in the back against Stamford and struggling with the injury on Tuesday. Regardless of fitness, there will be some changes to the starting XI anyway.

Margy explained: "I want to reward certain players for their patience and understanding this season. Players such as Scott Cheetham and Matthew Walwyn. Lewis Lacy will also come back in after missing out in recent weeks and Mike Norton will play because he’s had a nightmare season with the injury he got against Blyth."

FC United’s season may end tomorrow but Margy’s work will be far from complete. He said: "We’ll aim to sign up all the players for next season and I’ll also be having a look around to see who we can bring in to strengthen the squad. After that, we’ve got the visit of Benfica to look forward to and then I’ll be spending some time with my family."
