League mourns young ref gunned down in Tunisia

The Evo-stik Northern Premier League has sent its condolences to the family and friends of teenage referee Joel Richards who was killed in Friday's Tunisia massacre.

Along with 38 other tourists, including his uncle Adrian Evans and grandad Patrick Evans, Joel was an innocent victim of the gun and grenade attack in Sousse. His 16-year-old brother Owen survived the terrorist outrage and is being hailed a hero after selflessly helping a woman to shelter.

Described as "a talented young man with the world at his feet" by the Birmingham FA who have opened a book of condolences at their headquarters, the 19-year-old officiated at a number of the EVO-STIK NPL fixtures last season.

Despite his age, the young official and student at the University of Worcester had already been tipped to go far in the game. As a member of the FA’s National Referee Development Group, he was one of only a handful of referees in the country to be fast tracked to level 4. A year after qualifying as a referee aged 16 in 2011, he was also elected as chairman of the newly formed Birmingham County FA Youth Council.

The Birmingham FA credit Joel with being instrumental in raising £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and a number of his referring colleagues have now set up a GoFundMe Account in his memory.
