On a night when light rain turned into a torrential downpour shortly after half time, Hornchurch lost to a very strong Luton Town side, for whom goalkeeper Mark Tyler was making his first appearance since his knee injury in March. And Tyler was kept busy by the dangerous home forwards throughout the match.

Sam Mott was in early action, when he dived to keep out a hard shot from the right, but it was Hornchurch who almost took the lead when Jed Chouman switched play to the right wing with a 40 yard pass, and Abs Thompson made ground before slipping the ball to George Purcell, who cut inside of this marker and fired in a hard shot which came back off the inside of the far post.

Thompson continued to threaten on the right and Tyler did well to save his shot at the second attempt, whilst at the other end Mott made an excellent save from Ryan Hall, who, on 17 minutes, opened the score when he found himself unmarked and ideally placed to convert a cross from Luke Trotman.

Tyler made a good save from Lee Prescott, turning the shot over the bar for a corner, but it was Luton who increased their lead when Zane Banton, seemingly offside, stroked the ball home from Hall’s centre on 35 minutes.

The heavy rain in the second half eventually eased and stopped, and Hornchurch enjoyed the better of the territorial play. Joey May made a good weaving run but was eventually tackled by Curtley Williams, whilst keeper Mark Tyler denied Purcell.

Dave Collis replaced Prescott for the first of several substitutions, and Leon Smith came on for Danny Jonson and was quickly called upon to make a good interception when Luton threatened to break through. Leon Joseph gave the visiting defence a difficult time with some penetrating runs, but Hornchurch were unable to find a way through a well-organised defence.
