Rovers midfielder Wedgbury aims to maintain positive start

Midfield general Sam Wedgbury believes that if Forest Green Rovers maintain the effort and energy they’ve shown in their work so far this season then a successful Bank Holiday weekend isn’t too far away.

Wedgbury has featured in all five wins that have rocketed FGR to the top of the league table so far this season.

Now the former Stevenage and Sheffield United man is eager to extend that winning run, with a trip to come on Saturday at Kidderminster and then a home tie with new boys Bromley on Bank Holiday Monday.

He said: “Obviously we want to try and pick up maximum points again. Kidderminster is going to be tough, we all know that. We’re working hard and the good thing is we’ve probably not played as well as we can in a few of the games out of the five.

“There’s still a lot more to come from us. Someone is going to be on the end of a drubbing in one of the weeks coming up hopefully. We’ve just got to keep working, doing what we’re doing on the training field, and we’ll be fine.

“We targeted the first month and we wanted maximum points and fortunately enough it has come off. I’m disappointed with the way we conceded the goal last week. It would have been nice to get five results with five clean sheets but that’s just nit picking.

“Saturday is going to be really tough. I know they haven’t been winning but they’ve still got a good side. It’s how we perform on the day.”

By the time the full time whistle is blown at Rovers Kids Go Free game with Bromley at The New Lawn on Monday afternoon, Ady Pennock’s side will have played seven games already of the 46-match league season.

And with two matches to come in the space of three days, Wedgbury is confident that if him and his teammates do things the correct way, recovery won’t be an issue in the lead up to last season Conference South champions visit.

“It’s about looking after your body and getting enough fluid on board in between the games,” he adds. “We’re in on Sunday for a cool down so it will be a light session, but it’s good to get all the lactic acid out of your legs.

“We do it right and all of the lads know how to look after themselves. We’ll be fine.”

It’s hoped a large number of FGR supporters will get behind the team at Aggborough on Saturday for what is one of the club’s shortest scheduled away trips this season.

Fans can book on the supporters’ coach going to the match, and with the Bromley clash free for under 16s to attend too, Wedgbury is calling on the club’s supporters to offer their support in voice and number in the next few days.

“At Boreham Wood they travelled well. It’s always good when you’ve got a good following behind you – it’s like playing at home.

“We had it a few times last season. Barnet away was one of those games where there was a big crowd there and it does spur you on a little bit to do well.

“If we keep winning we’ll keep drawing numbers to the ground so it’s about us and how we do things so hopefully we can keep winning in style.”
