Heed defender wants to continue good form

Gateshead defender Craig Baxter is hopeful that the Heed can continue to perform positively on the pitch – and with it, lure the crowds to the International Stadium across the season ahead.

Gateshead sit sixth in the Vanarama National League heading into the Bank Holiday weekend, with two fixtures to fulfil in the space of three days.

Malcolm Crosby takes his side to newly-promoted Guiseley tomorrow, before the Tynesiders return to home soil to take on Lincoln City on Monday.

Attendances at the GIS rose by an impressive 33% last term, with Baxter desperate to see that trend continue in the months to come.

He said: “You could always tell when there were over 1,000 people in the stands – it made a big difference.

“At the end of the day, the only way you can generate an atmosphere is through the fans.

“This is my ninth season here now. The attendances have grown and grown in that time, and it’d be a real shame to see that fizzle out.

“It can only have a positive impact for the lads. When we go a goal behind, we don’t want the place to go dead – we want the supporters to get behind us. We want them to give us a lift.

“Obviously, it’s up to us to keep performing. We have to give supporters a reason to come, and we have to give them the belief that we’re always in a game.

“But we’ve had a good start. And if we can keep our run going, we know we’re going to see more people coming through the gates.

“We’ve seen that in the past. When we’ve been successful, we generate more publicity, we stay in the public eye, and we see that reflected in our attendance figures.

“The more people there are, the more noise there is, and the more of a boost it can give to the team.

“Fingers crossed, we can stay up there and we'll have more people coming to get behind us.”
