City scored nine goals in their previous Youth Cup match and it looked as though they intended to give a repeat performance, as they moved confidently into a three goal lead, only for Hornchurch to get back on level terms by the interval.

 

City started powerfully and took the lead in the second minute through Joe O’Hare, who finished off a good run and cross by Andy Fennell.

 

Joe Bowles was called upon to keep the score down, but he could do nothing to prevent a spectacular shot by Billy Harris, out on the right wing, from entering the net.

 

City threatened to overwhelm Hornchurch and O’Hare went close with a header from a corner, and it was no surprise when Thomas Colville put them three goals up midway through the first half.

 

Just over a minute later Solomon Ogunwomoju pulled a goal back, after Connor Pearce had been unable to hold on to the first shot, and this signalled a remarkable revival, as City were forced back onto defence. And it was Solomon Ogunwomoju who headed home powerfully past Pearce.

 

With two minutes to go to half time, Matthey Bentley fired home from outside the area to level the score.

 

The second half saw both teams going close and both keepers made good saves to keep the score level. With five minutes left, and with extra time looming, a Hornchurch free kick sailed into the goalmouth and George O’Connor scored what proved to be the winning goal, although there were then seven minutes of stoppage time to endure, with City threatening on several occasions, though they never managed to get past a very determined Hornchurch defence.

 

Hornchurch are at home to Grays Athletic or Eton Manor in the next round, which will take place in the first week in October.
