Fullers Earth is a substance that was used for 'dry cleaning' cloth, long before modern chemicals were invented. Those in the clothing trade who performed this process were called fullers.

Hope this helps (not a wind up, is it?)

thanks chaps..no not a wind up .. trying to help someone with a history homework question.. unfortunatly my glorious grade 'b' o level was so long ago its almost historic itself....

admin you are correct, i think, in that a bloke called something fuller did all that globe stuff, but merv is more along the right lines for what im looking for.. its about how some surnames came about.. thatcher, cooper, smith etc and what they used to do... but im stuck on fuller.. so merv thinks they were originally dry cleaners? i like the sound of that. thanks <img border="0" title="" alt="[smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
