Non League Paper

Not only Greggers, but the whole of the stand behind the goal was exstatic when that ball went in. It had been a terrific match but we all sensed that Basingstoke were more than happy to play for the home draw. Shame really as they showed some good footballing flair, but rarely with enough passion to actually take the game. As for Canvey, they were up for it all afternoon and in spite of (or should that be, because of...) some great shots, some great saves from Scott 'Sausages' Tarr and an unlucky strike against the woodwork, Canvey just couldn't get into the lead.

Duffers had a good game on the left but I still feel that there is not enough service from the right. JK was brilliant, Boylan chased absolutely everything (terrific work-rate that guy has) and Wardy was masterful at the back.

Chenners was outpaced by Basingstoke star McAllistair early in the game and we conceded a goal. Luckily Boylan was on hand a few minutes later to pick up on an error in the Basingstoke defence and run the ball into an empty net.

From then on Tarr wasted as much time as possible whenever there was a goal-kick or off-side free-kick to be taken. I think they all sensed that the longer the game went on, the more likely it was that Canvey would score. For the first 20 minutes of the second half the Islanders camped out in the home penalty area.

At the end of the game some disgruntled home fans were asking why the biased referee had allowed 8 minutes of extra time in order for Canvey to get their late winner. I suggested that they should have been asking their own players that question. Every time they slowed the action down the ref (who was poor by anybody's standard) pointed to his watch, warning the procrastinators that he would be adding time on.

Canvey were disallowed a penalty in the second half when not only was Junior's shirt pulled off his back, it was so blatent that the shirt was laundered, ironed and neatly folded up before being given back to him. The refs guide dog saw the incident but neither he, nor his lackeys on the touchlines, caught site of it.

We were all left wondering what incident he DID see when Basingstoke were awarded a penalty a few minutes later. None of the home fans I spoke to afterwards could see anything wrong. As it happens they didn't prosper and justice was done when the spot kick was hammered into the upright and bounced away to safety.

A good game of football that might have been even better if (1) the match officials had been up to the task in hand and, (2) Basinstoke had concentrated more on playing an open game (which would have given Canvey more room to strut their stuff).

But what do I know? I'm only an out of work match reporter from a banned website.

I just wrote a long reply which was then deleted due to a IE Crash

I'll think up a better one and come back later

BTW - Non-League UK owners.. Just to let you know the 'Check Spelling' Button appears to redirect to a dead link

Superb report Merv...we have really missed your reporting this season.

Will the Club and official web [****!!****] please sort something out with the banned three so normal service can be resumed.

I agree with Dickie D - another superb match report Merv. Perhaps you should email your match report to the "official" site so they can see how to produce decent match reports on Canvey games.

The site could also benefit form some advice with regard to visual presentation, stats and almost every other aspect of having a footbal clunb websites.

It's getting embarrasing to have to read the oppositions match reports on their websites to see how the gane went. (Nearly as embarrassing as hearing the official attendance on cup matches)
