LEATHERHEAD 1 HORNCHURCH 0

Hornchurch finished their pre-season build-up with a trip around the M25 for the third week in succession, this time to Junction 9 on a motorway which behaved itself.

After dominating for long periods, Hornchurch must be wondering how they came away with a one-goal defeat, the only goal of the match coming on 74 minutes when a cross from the right found Evan Lopes, who was ideally placed to follow up after the first shot was blocked.

Hornchurch started strongly, and could have taken the lead in the second minutes when Nathan Cooper burst through from the half way line, rounding two defenders, before being brought down on the edge of the area, by a tackle which in a league match would have warranted at least a yellow card.

George Purcell fired the free kick past the defensive wall, but also wide of the far post.

Ayrton Coley, on the right wing, gave the home defence a worrying time with his rapid pace, and when he sent a good centre into the middle, Joe Taylor in the home goal saved Purcell’s overhead kick.

James Morrish then headed over from a well-flighted centre by Purcell, and Leatherhead had their first opportunity when Nicky Symons conceded a free kick after a tackle on Lloyd Harrington. Harrington took the free kick himself, but the ball came back harmlessly off the wall.

Callum Davies had a shooting chance when he ran on to a Kiernan Hughes Mason pass, but Nathan Cooper was quick to tackle and concede a corner, which came to nothing.

Hornchurch controlled the game for long periods, and Jed Chouman was unlucky with a hard shot, which Taylor did well to hold.

Leatherhead had a splendid opportunity to open the scoring when Mason broke clear, but Sam Mott came out quickly and Mason placed his shot wide of the goal.

The second half saw Hornchurch continue to have the better of the territorial play, and Kenzer Lee created an opening with a rapid run through the middle, only to put his shot a fraction too far to the right of the goal.

Manager Jim McFarlane made several changes, and Dave Collis came on, and soon made his mark with an excellent free kick into a packed goalmouth, where Harry Agombar headed wide of the post.

A similar move ended with Elliot Styles heading over, as Leatherhead defended in depth.

Sam Mott had little to do for long periods, but Leatherhead scored what proved to be the only goal of the match sixteen minutes from time, which led to the introduction of JJ Da Cruz and Suley Zudhu, the latter causing Leatherhead plenty of problems on the right side of the field.

Leatherhead defended two more corners, and Leon McKenzie went close, and with two minutes left to play, they survived a strong penalty appeal to hold on to their lead.
