100 years of football at Stonebridge Road

Recommended Posts

Just before the Margate game last Thursday somebody commented on the condition of the main stand at Stonebridge Road. I replied that, to be fair, it was 100 years old, then the penny dropped - when is the centenary of football at Stoneberidge Road to be commemorated?

Thanks to some research by webmeister Dave I am now told the first match for Northfleet United at Stonebridge Road was on 2nd September 1905 when they beat East Ham Athletic 1-0.

I now understand both Brian and Glenn are keen to record this milestone and that at least one commemorative match will be played next summer.

Why not make this a big event, especially using past players, involving sponsors, and commemorative souvenirs etc and spread it over several weeks?

Any ideas? At least we've got a year to organise it.

Feet up in Webster mansions by 9.p.m. after a leisurely drive back the pretty way. Took three quarters of an hour to escape the single track chaos that is the Deva exit into a retail park!

Thought the NLP report was well wide of the mark and I hope my drivel in the Reporter this week will correct the imbalance. Apart from ten minutes in the first half when Chester went into warp factor I thought we controlled the game by and large.

Do you agree o king of Knotty Ash?

PS another fine commentary from your good self, buit remember next time no tongues.

Even better, how about a lucrative match against Guru Nanak? The fixture would certainly appeal to many in the town and there is the chance that the glamorous tie could attract a large attendance.

Only glamourous to those who claim not to be English eh?

I think you'regetting the hang of this idea folks. Wouldn't it be great to have representative sides from all of these diverse areas(from Guru Nanak to Sunderland to Nottingham Forest to Villa) all playing games both as pre season and friendlies during the year. After all we often have friendlies now to give our squad players a run out.

It will be great to see some of the old players and I am sure Gary Aldous could put together an Old Boys XI to take on a Veterans Select Squad maybemanaged by Chris Kinnear or Tommy Samson. Vinnie Jones, Andy Townsend, Stuart Pearce and Steve Bruce all played at Stonebridge amongst others at some time or another.Any other suggestions?

In all honesty I made the Guru Nanak suggestion tongue in cheek. Although I personally would enjoy a match between the Fleet and Guru's I wouldn't expect everyone in the borough to find the prospect as appealing as I do.

I think too commemerate such an even in the clubs history something with some kind of commercial spin off should be considered. It's only a suggestion but how about a 'Fleet Festival of Football'. Something that lasts for a four or five days over the summer and incorporates a fun day and a chance for children to meet the players with a match or too against teams that have figures in the clubs history, starting right from grass roots level upto hopefully one or two of those mentioned above.

Thats a great idea Chas, I think Gary Aldous might be a bit busy with his building firm but Chris Kinnear should be available

He wouldn't want to come, he only likes being with little clubs

Definitely....Footballing legends like Steve Portway.

PS Ullathorne's success down the left explained:
The pitch was never at right angles until we straightened and relined it...
Obvious he was going to find it easier to cross when he had an angle of 110 degrees rather than 90!
